I just installed a wifi router for my mum in law (76) so that she can connect it and download books onto it direct.

While I was upstairs doing this she then registered it direct with Amazon & downloaded her first book.

Just goes to show how easy to use it is.

Hi - sorry to jump onto this thread, but I am looking at buying my Mum a Kindle for Christmas and not sure which one to get? She's totally addicted to books and her house is FULL of them, so this seems to be the solution! We've been at her for months to get one and last Christmas she decided against it as "nothing beats the feel of a real book" now after 11 months of convincing her this is the route to go down I want to make sure we get the right one, my questions are:

Is the keyboard a "must have", I've read through some threads on here, some say yes, a keyboard one is easier, some say no.

She has really fast internet at home and a notebook, what else will she need? I've read you don't get a power adapter, is this the case for both the one with the keyboard and the one without as I'm thinking about times she may not have her notebook to charge it.

Can I buy just the adapter? Is it the same as an iphone one? I saw one on Tesco's but at £17 I presume there is a cheaper option.

Is a screen protector and case needed? If so, any better/cheaper suggestions of where to buy them?

Sorry for all the questions, but knowing her so well, if she's not comfortable/happy with it the house is going to literally burst without the amount of books she has! LOL!

  • On the question of book sharing - if you have more than 1 kindle linked to an Amazon Userid, you can read anything sent from amazon on both at the same time.
My parents have 2 and they activly do this - it was the subject of a long conversation with them this weeknd :)

I have the keyboard one. The only time i use it is for creating folders for authors. I can see the point of the keyboard if you are using the kindle for textbooks and want to put in comments but otherwise the actual keyboard isn't that useful in my experience (however the much greater memory might be!). We've just bought the non keyboard version for the father in law for Christmas

I think the keyboard one comes with a power adaptor as standard

yep adaptors are everywhere I just bought a socket one from amazon marketplace for 2 pounds and a car adaptor for me from play.com

Don't know about the screen protectors but a case is handy.
The amazon branded ones are very expensive but if you search amazon outside the kindle store (for some reason if you're in the kindle store the only options are the very expensive ones) or play.com or ebay you get loads of much cheaper options.

For the FIL we've got a leather case from GADGETPLUSUK plus a charger (half price with a case from this supplier) for about 11 pounds (amazon marketplace). They arrived on Friday I'm very impressed with the quality especially considering the price. Just be careful to buy the right size case as obviously the kindle keyboard is longer than the new one.

I'm thinking of getting the 3G wifi kindle - can you surf the internet while abroad on it, using the 3G, or are you limited as to what you can do on it.
  • Yes, you can surf, but no flash or movies. No probs overseas, assuming you can get a singnal - I had no probs in teh south of france. Picking up emails, BBC news site etc.

That sounds just what I need. Does it cost anything to use?
