Advice on new SORN laws

Hey.
I purchase a non-runner January of this year for spares for my own vehicle. I covered it up in my garage and called it a day. I had noticed after so many months that I hadn't received the log book so I thought I'd apply for one, received around a month or so later.
A friend was around the other day and he asked about the car in the garage. He told me that I must either have it SORN'd or apply for insurance & tax as it's now against the law if you don't.
If I where to declare the car now SORN or buy road tax/insurance, will I be fined for not doing so earlier? The logbook shows the day I acquired the vehicle, and the day I applied/received the log book.
If this is the case, will it help if I transferred the V5 to ,y friends name/address as the new keeper, and then have it immediately SORN'd or taxed under the new keeper? Would this dodge any fines? Or will I still receive a letter for not having it SORN'd or taxed as the previous owner?
All the help I can get is appreciated. Thanks.

If its not taxed you should have SORN'd it anyway, Thats been around since around 1997.
New rules are if its not insured then you need to SORN it also.

Thanks. What if I transferred ownership to someone else, and then SORN'd or tax'd it? Would this change anything?0 -
What is it at the moment? Chances are it's already SORN.
Blame them for the V5 delay.

Don't forget, if you want to tax it, then you need to insure it first, can't tax without insurance.

I wouldn't bother trying to dodge it just SORN it and ignore any penalty. I've had penalties from the DVLA. They send a few debt outstanding letters then give up if you ignore them long enough.
The police also know that the SORN on my car has expired and they didn't care. It's off road and they didn't take any action. They were enquiring about someone else at my address and did a licence check on the car in my drive to see if it was thiers or not.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
