Clarification on New law on having a car on the road?

Options
Hi can someone clarify this for me. I got a car today with 7 day free insurance, and a 12 month tax disc. But i don't want to start my insurance until i've done my 1st year of driving (15/12/11) because of the savings i can make year on year if i make the renewal on the anniversary of my license issue.
Anyway to cut things short, would the fact that i have a valid tax disc be ok or do i still have to have my car insured aswell to keep it on the road.

Thanks

needs to be insured if its taxed..

if not taxed and sorn'd you dont need insurance so long as its OFF the road.. Ie on a private drive/private land..

Well, it need to be insured by someone, but it does not have to be you. Or you could just take out a monthly policy. Why did you buy a new car now if you wernt going to use it for amonth and a half? You must have better will power than me.

    No, he's right.

If the car is taxed it needs to be insured.

If it is SORN'd it doesn't need to be insured (but it must be parked off the road)

Depends on how you read it. If he means not taxed AND sorned [as in the not being both parts] then wrong. If he means not taxed BUT sorned, then it's right.

Thanks. I couldn't find info/the link before hand. so if i do a SORN next week, and surrender my tax disc for the remainder 51 weeks i had left on the disc, will they refund me for at least 11 months of tax disc?
Also does the vehicle have to be parked at my house, can it be parked at a friends house for instance
The plan would be to take the vehicle of the road 27/10, then put the car back on the road 15/12. would i be eligible for the relevant refunds

The SORN declaration is an alternative to tax, not as well as.
So it won't be SORN and taxed.

Sorn it and return the tax disc before the end of this month to get 11 months tax back. They only deal in full calender months.

Park it where you like as long as it is off road.

Yeah, but it could be Neither.

  • Rules are -
SORN a car or other vehicle and it has to be on a driveway or in a garage - no Verge as that is classed as road.
You must display a valid disc if parked on road/verge.

You must also have valid car insurance regardless of where you store it now. The DVLA will know from the Insurers exactly who does not hold any on any vehicle at any time. There are many TV ads at moment explaining this. The one I have seen has a little red car driving around with lots of green ones. This is to try and stop all uninsured drivers from being illegal on a road, although it will not stop a stolen car, hitting you and that situation. But it will lessen the likelyhood of other incidents. It will take time, but as DVLA already know, it will only be a matter of time before the letter lands on your mat/letterbox and you are in serious trouble. I believe they can impound your car and if fines not paid, will crush it. Already happens for untaxed.
    So take heed.
