My DH is just using our marriage certificate to update his name on his driving licence. I will post back on here if it comes back rejected. But it states in the form we had to fill in that a marriage certificate was evidence and did not say anything about it not being ok if you were a man.

We will do the same for our passports but they dont expire for a couple of years so not doing it until then. If so I think we'll go that route you posted Debbie if they wont accept our certificate so thanks for that. We have a friend who is a solicitor.

OP - My DH sounds a bit like you - always 'different' to the rest of the family and has no attachment to his Dad so no attachment to his name whatsoever. His parents are divorced so his Mum thinks its great im not taking his full name. He also said he was happy to change his name to mine instead of double barrelling, but Id already started the process of changing it!
  • Simplest and cheapest is a Statutory Declaration, as mentioned by Debbie above.

This is a simple document, declared to and signed by a Justice of the Peace, in which you identify yourself by existing name and address (prehaps annex and refer to copies of birth certifcate and N.I. number) and state your new name and the date from which you wish to use and be known by it.

Many years ago I changed the spelling of my surname by signing a Statutory Declaration. Legally I didn't HAVE to do this; you can use any name you like as long as there is no intention to deceive or commit a crime. However, for changing details on bank accounts, notifying DWP re N.I. no, etc. etc. it helped to have this paperwork.

I think some CABs can arrange a JP to attend (e.g. one day a month) for things like this.

Just thought Id update this to say both mine and my DHs driving licenses have come back updated with our new names from the DVLA.

So you will be able to get this changed using your marriage certificate.
