Cancelling Sky mid contract

Options
Hi all, just wondered if anyone knew if it is possible to cancel your sky account midway through contract. We are on major belt tightening at home and sky is costing us nearly £60 a month for internet, tv and phone so possibly an option to cancel and go somewhere cheaper. We have had sky for years but in March 2010 we signed up for HD as it gave us a free box (our old one was on its way out) so I am unsure if our contract re started for 12 months from then? I have been on hold to sky for ages so thought I would try here to see if anyone else has been in a similar position or could offer advice!

Thanks...

If you signed up in March 2010,then you're out of contract & it's just 30 day notice & you can cancel the HD &/or the whole lot, but if you meant March 2011,then you'll have to pay the remainder of the contract off & you can't downgrade the HD but you can remove movies or sports.
  • Thanks for the reply Spike, I did mean 2011! We don't have movies or sport... may have to sit it out then ;0(

Does signing up to an HD box in March 2011 tie in the internet and telephone service for a further 12 months, or just the TV? And even if it does, is there not an option to revert to the lowest cost option (line rental with basic Sky talk, free internet and basic channels with the HD pack) which should "only" cost around £43 a month?

You should have separate contracts for the TV and internet/phone sides-so it should tie you into the TV side only.

If you are thinking about cancelling your Sky contract to get the SAME 'bundle' elsewhere for less, you will probably be disappointed.

I think it's clear that the OP wants to save money by dropping the TV subscription. It's the obvious thing to do if in major belt tightening mode, particularly as you can continue to get free TV channels.

Easiest way to cancel mid-contract is to tell Sky that your company is moving you to Saudi (or wherever) for a year* at short notice and tell them you'd like them to install your dish over there. After a brief giggle at your stupidity they will say, regretfully, that they will have to cancel your contract. This will work if you are sufficiently convincing and especially if you can give them your "new" address abroad.

*This allows you to sign up again in a year's time.

'Moving abroad' does not void your contact. If it did, everyone would use that excuse.

Neither would you be 'out of contract' at any stage of the game. Your minimum term will have been completed, and you could terminate with just 1 month's notice. If you are prepared to lose some channels, and don;t live in a cabled area, Top Up TV and BT Vision are the only viable options.
