OTTOMH its an early Pentium-4 doorstop. 1GB is going to be the max memory you can put in and memory for it will cost a fortune as it is DDR ram.

It should be reasonably speedy enough to use for email, web browsing and office type stuff but only once the memory is 1GB. Chances are it came with 512MB or even 256MB which is pretty unusable nowadays.

Takethis is right about the fact they're built like tanks. Anthonis doesn't know his arris from his elbow. Its a Pentium 4, not a Pentium 3 and my parents have a Pentium 4 desktop that runs Vista just dandy with 2GB in it.

    Hey mate,
    What you know about pc's?
So what if you put there 1Gb ? its DDR not DDR2! It has only 512 L2 cache, low clocked proc. And yeah it has some crappy hdd with 40GB 5400RPM.
And you think that this crap gonna handle normally decent office softwares? Or decent web browsing? Unless you want to wait forever them to open...
I think you are from ICE age mate...
For £100 on ebay you can get something with more better spec...

And don't compare desktop pc to notebooks, because they differ a lot!

Give this !!!! back for him, take money back and never come back to him.... Go on ebay there are plenty better deals than this old crap. Hate when people cheat like that.....

I am replying to your post as it was the 1st but am in agreement with everyone else's opinion that it is a bit of rubbish.
What happened was my OH had a fairly old Dell that was working ok and then the graphics failed. So the tech guy I usually use had moved premises and was not around so I went to the new shop set up by his protegee. He advertised on his website that he did free diagnostics but when we went back he said we had to pay £40.00 if he did no work on it. He said the graphics card was part of the Motherboard so it would be expensive to fix. However he had this Dell Latitude he was selling for a client and it would be £100 but he had to clean it up 1st. I spoke to OH and he said that sounded good and if I could ask him if he could transfer all his photos across to the new one. So he said that would cost £20.00 but the laptop was £130.00 as his client wanted more for it. So as OH was using my laptop I agreed and we went off on holiday. When we got back the laptop was ready so we gave him £150.00 and took it home. He wanted to destroy the old one for us but I said no we would keep it. We then had a hard time getting online and found out it had no wireless card. So we got online with a cable and the next day I went back and I said I know it has no wireless card because i looked and suggested maybe we could use the one from the old laptop and he agreed and then said we would have to wait 3 days as he had other jobs waiting. I lost it then and said maybe he would give us our money back instead. With that he suddenly said come back later that day and it would be ready.
So we picked it up and OH took it home. It is hopelessly slow and even when it is used at mine ( where I have good broadband signal) it is painful to use.
Now my original Tech guy, who was always really honest and rarely charged anyone hardly anything for his jobs , was in the shop with this young guy when I went in as he is moving into the same premises.
I am really annoyed at myself as I am rarely taken for a fool but obviously have been this time.
Should I remove all my OH'S photos onto my laptop and just take it back and demand my money back? Where do I stand legally?

If you think that you have a good relationship with the 'original' Tech guy, perhaps you should speak, nicely, with him.

But do it now. Tell him that your husband does not find it suitable and is really angry with you. A few tears might help. :)

I will spend this evening removing all of his data and when I take Mum to town tommorow I will go in and hit the roof. I may try some tears aswell. I think I have the original Tech guys phone number so maybe I will call him too. I always trusted him which was why I thought this young guy was honest. He also has this annoying 0844 number that makes you think he has a large business full of employees when there is only him and he never answers the phone. Will let you all know how I get on. Thanks all

Don't hit the roof. What did you not understand about 'nicely'?
Just tell that your husband is angry at you. You'll do better to have him on side. Especially if he thinks that he can keep you as a customer. Just tell him that it simply is not suitable for your needs. Too slow and wireless capability is not good enough. It would cost you too much to upgrade these things. So it would work out better if you just bought a newer laptop.

He'll probably try to get you to take some other rubbish that he has in the shop. So be strong, but be nice....but persistent. :) Accept the loss of the £20 for the photo transfer and maybe negotiate a few pounds for his trouble. Tell him that he can keep the Wireless Card from your old laptop.

Goodness...I've just seen what you paid for it....at first you wrote £100, though your second post states £130!

So aim to get at least £120 back, if not £130.

There was little need for you to pay to transfer your data. We could have instructed you how to do it yourself, for the price of an external hard drive caddy. Less than £3.

    Next time, ask here first!
  • I would never suggest purchases like this, theres always difficulties, i would suggest finding a bidding site would be your best bet.

What are you talking...? This laptop is not infected....it's just c^%p. ;) Not easy to clean a t*rd.

    Have you seen the thing?

Seriously though, perhaps if they max out the RAM, it might help a little. Together with a better Wireless Card. But it is not worth the spending of more money.

Oops! my fault for posting in haste and not checking what the laptop specs were :(
    Sorry about that.

He originally quoted £100.00 but said he needed to speak to the owner and then it became £130.00. I actually own 2 Hard Drive Caddies but was a bit worried about transferring his photos. Actually I could have easily done it myself. So this evening I am trying to transfer the photos myself by using a 256mp key thing. However it seems to be taking forever as the laptop is really slow. So I thought I would try the caddy route but I cant seem to find the hard drive to remove it.
