Agree we don't want to start a trade war but could we in any way impose a higher rate of VAT on luxury goods such as TV's, game consoles, phones etc. Probably too expensive to implement I suspect.
no. we're only allowed to have 3 different rates of VAT as per EU law, and we already have 0%, 5% and 20%.0 -

irrespective of their politics - he is right that the majority of Brits are lazy. Boris was saying yesterday "why are so many immigrants employed by Pret" and he is right - you never see any Brits employed by Pret, or Starbucks or whatever in London. The answer is, because they can't be bothered. They would rather claim their dole money. BUT most importantly, the Brits see working in Pret as beneath them. This is the culture we have. If you're a brain surgeon, you can live in a nice home and buy ipads etc - but, if you are an uneductaed cretin you are entitled to the same lifestyle. this is the ridiculous culture we have. everyone is entitled to everything, and everything NOW.
until this changes, we are doomed.
maybe the answer in the long term is to ban credit altogether except for (a) homes (b) cars and (c) businesses. Maybe we should not be "entitled" to credit for holidays or for clothes. Maybe people should save for these things.0 -

I suppose I see that, but to be frank if it were me in a position of claiming benefits and the option to work came up with little difference in finanacial gain then I would rather be employed than claim any benefits.
But for me it is more of a pride thing.0 -
Lets go back to social security being a safety net and not a lifestyle choice, ensure fraudulent claiming is villified and made as socially unacceptable as drink driving, and maybe bring in a scheme that some states in America had whereby if you have a child, and are not working, you get a set amount of money, and are told have more kids if you want but you wont get extra money or a bigger property, perhaps by bringing in schemes such as this, the savings could be used to help the genuine needy cases.Thankyou Sir Alex for 26 years0

There is madness and :- ...maybe the answer in the long term is to ban credit altogether except for (a) homes (b) cars and (c) businesses. Maybe we should not be "entitled" to credit for holidays or for clothes. Maybe people should save for these things.
Who would sit in judgement as to whether a credit application was appropriate ? Why are cars ahead of business ? What of season ticket loans ? Loans for bicycles. Loans for education. Loans for medical treatment etc ... ?

exactly, it should be a safety net - and should be more taylored to individual needs. what safety net is it for a man with a family of 5 who has worked for 20 years and is earning £5000 a month - to suddenly get £400 a month or whatever it is. This person should have a safety net in line with what he needs for 3-6 months in order to find suitable employment/ get his finances in order - and then, after 6 months, should get nothing. If he has large mortgage payments, large bills, kids in pvt school etc etc then there is no safety net for him. There is only a continual safety blanket for the people happy to live like that forever.0
