Hello Nora x
I can totally identify with the home-town situation. When I first had my children I settled just down the road from where I grew up. At first I found it comforting to have so much 'help' with the little ones and I am still grateful for all that was done for us, however, as I got older and my confidence grew, I began to find it all a bit claustrophobic and longed to spread my wings a bit.
The real turning point was when I had put a deposit down on the car of my dreams, it was a little Fiat 500 - an original one imported from Italy, I wanted that car so badly! Anyway, I allowed myself to be talked out of it by my parents and brother, the words 'death trap' having been used to full effect...I still dream about that little red car. I bought a corsa instead, very good car and definitely the sensible choice, but just not me (think the bobble hat!)
So I escaped, only by ten miles to a little city populated by lots of eccentric students with a lovely enclave of hippies and a council run by The Green Party, and I love it. I still have the comfort of having my folks down the road but I feel that I can be myself now rather than who they expect me to be...hooray'Forget injuries, never forget kindnesses' - Confucious0 -

My parents gave away one of our dogs while I was on a school trip to Wales....never really trusted them (around my pets) or the country (for distracting me) since! If only my DD1 could understand me as well as you have come to understand your mum;)

Well, it's taken me 36 years and a nervous breakdown...and didn't stop us hissing and huffing at each other this evening while I was cooking our dinner, and she suddenly decided that it was necessary to wash up and faff around the kitchen at that very moment! Every time I reached for a utensil etc I'd just used it had been spirited away....:rotfl:0 -
If I bought my mum a bunch of flowers she'd wonder what I'd been up to (or what I wanted)
I love my mum and dad very very much (but I'm really a daddy's girl) but we never use the "L" word to each other and we never ever give spontaneous hugs etc. I know they love me, so they don't have to say it and they show me in a million different ways every week.
However, I tell my DD's all the time how much I love them, I never leave for work without hugging them and telling them that and they still go to bed with a goodnight kiss and a 'Love you' even when we could happily strangle each other.
I think it's just a generation thing.Free by FiftyDebt of the Moment -August NSD Challenge 14/150
