Cat scratching

My little darling has decided that her beautiful claws now need sharpening on my new hall runner
Does anyone have any ideas what I can put on the carpet to make her STOP. OH is just about to remove her claws or amputate her paws
I've tried pepper and some other smelly stuff she hates, but to no avail. Any suggestions are well worth a try
Thanks

Do you have a cat scratching post? If not, get one immediately and introduce your cat to it and encourage her to use it.
Our two cats use one regularly although they do also use rugs and stair carpets so we would also like to know of an effective deterrent.
Declawing is quite common in the USA but I think it is a horribly brutal thing to do so please do not consider that.
Scratching is one of the hazards of cat ownership.0 -
When ever she does it, squirt her with water, she'll associate clawing the runner with the nasty squirt of water and should stop doing it. It won't harm her but she'll be a bit miffed!0

Hi,
We have two Red Burmese and a moggy and the moggy was scratching (and weeing) like mad around our new house. We tried some sprays that you use over the scratching/wee spot and that is supposed to trick them into it being a "nice" spot and to cheek mark it rather than to scratch or wee. What we have finally found to work (for scratching and wee) is to use a scratch post sprayed with catnip. It is both fun to watch (a cat in a somewhat drug induced state) and it stops them. We first invested in a cardboard type which had real catnip sprinkled onto it (from Wyvale Garden centre) and then an old scratch post sprayed with catnip.

This site has reasonable priced ones, i have two large ceiling posts, the two kittens i have only use these for scratching, they don't bother with furniture
They are a god send

When you see her go to scratch something you don't want her to, quickly pick her up and run her paw down the scratch post, she will soon get the idea0 -
Use cling film on each foot?0

I agree with the selotape hint. I've used this (buy double sided tape). The other thing I've used with some success was taping down some bubblewrap where the cat was scratching. She was terrified of the bubbles popping.0
