Hi
What is the difference between a grounting sponge and a cheap sponge used for washing the car?

Apart from the price;)

Thanks

They are made of different stuff,(with larger holes to help keep grit away from the paintwork) and softer.
A lot of people like to use them when washing vehicles with Optimum No Rinse but I prefer a microfibre cloth as recommended. :)

I do a fair bit of tiling. Either will do - the cheapest basic small pore sponges are probably the best and I often cut them in half to make them hand size and easily squeezed out. Of course the best is a tilers grout float which looks a bit like a sponge and rubber version of a plasterers float - obviously dearer than a sponge but way more effective and sooooo easy!!

I agree with harold. Tilers sponges arer a con sold at vastly inflated prices by Topps et al. A cheap one does the same job. But cheaper!!

Haha, I read it differently and thought you wanted to know what was the difference when washing a car because a lot of people do use a grout sponge :D

  • Done shed loads of grouting and I've got a cheap bath sponge which I just keep using with no problem at all.

When I did tiling for a living, quite some time ago. I would only use Ardex sponges.

They produced a better finish, removed more residue per wipe and lasted longer than any other product.

Ultimately, most of the benefits of these higher priced products were longevity and speed, which is ideal if it's a "tool" of the trade - but for a DIYer there's not enough in it to warrant the increased price.

The key is not to use your finger unless you want to be at it all day. Provided there's no lippage on the tiling a grout float applies it perfectly with minimal effort and will only leave a thin film on the tile surface.

If you wash the grout film off you'll be doing it forever. Let it dry and polish off with a soft cloth.

    Cheers

the no8 shaped sponges at three for a pound at the savastore are fine, in clean cold water when cleaning off grout,
which can take various times to go off longer in winter than summer,

when you press it with your fingernail, and it just indents its ready,

do not grout too far ahead, or it will go hard on you, press the mixed grout firmly with, a large american sqeegy trowel, or cheap blade type sqeegy is fine,

put a inch of clean cold water, in your tub, add powdered grout and mix it to a consistencey, like whipped cream, allow the mixed grout to rest for ten minutes, before you start using it
after pointing the grout ( if you want to ) polish tiles when dry, with a cotton thick teatowel. have fun siya karl.......:T
