There's plenty of sites that do restrict hotmail, gmail accounts primarily because of spammers. what's wrong with using your isp mail addy? Its not that you get spammed on here from mse other than newsletter. I always use throw temp address for other stuff if I am unsure of the site or possibly selling my email addy off

Because not all ISPs give email addresses, or what if they only give one, and there are 4 to a family.

Also the IP thing wont work some ISPs send out the same address to loads of people, AOL for example do it, ban one and you have banned everyone with that address.

    um... that can be difficult.

so we can only keep warning each other, so the maximum click the spammer get is once or twice, if we pull away the profit, they will go away eventually.

It would help massively if nobody posted on a thread once the first person has posted the thread has been reported.

The attempts we've seen today were buried down the board until they were ALL resurrected by one member five hours later. This was extremely foolish, and almost as bad as the original spamming incident.

If you charged a £1 to signup and gave that to charity then banned anyone who spammed then im sure they'd get the message rather than keep paying a £1 to signup.
Also if your here as a real person to save money then a £1 isnt alot and lets be honest most of us are here to help people save money and to save money on what we're gonna buy (meaning we can afford that £1 if we're spend money).
If we benifit out of this great site then wouldnt it be nice if charities do too!

I use to only have one with Zen it was only until 6 months ago or so you could get more than 1. Theres plenty of sites that wont accept hotmail addys and they dont have problems of getting many members.

You can easily get email address, I have used hundreds in my time to fight spam, heres just one example I use to report spammers, because I am serious about hitting them where it hurts.

One forum that I'm a member of restricts the abilities of new members. No PMs until they've been a member 30 days and certain forums are off limits until you've both been a member 60 days and posted 100 posts.

What if the shopping forums were 'read only' until members had crossed a threshold of xx days and xx posts? The spammers could still get to the other boards, but people are mostly looking for advice rather than products on the money and discussion boards, so are less likely to click.

    lisanmommy = gloria = couponlady66 = previous serial spammer

all from the same person. i think the best way to deal with it on our MSEer side, is as soon as the first person found out it is a spam link, post a reply to tell the other users, so the spammer won't be financially benefit from the innocents.

on the MSE site manager side, i would suggest them to add a policy that if the same IP number (the unique identity code of each computer) has been report abuse for more than 3 times, they will be banned for a set period of time for signing up as a newbie. and if somebody intentionally to hide their IP number, they are not allow to sign up as newbie at all.

maybe not the best way, but that's all i can think of.

think this person (couponlady) has had a couple of other names today but cant think of them but think this MASSIVE-TESTICALS who is spamming the cinema tickets thread at th moment is the same person...they have been reported...

if someone has posted on a thread that the spam has been reported......people should just let that thread sink down the forum instead of adding posts to it and raising it back to the top again....

mentioning no names...but one person in particular has a habit of doing this.....
  • Only problem is that I ONLY have a hotmail account as ISP account is in mum's name and it would mean making a brand new email account for one or two forums.
