My way of fighting spam and stopping people just taking from the site without giving anything is to have a £1 signup fee that goes to charity.
I did say this in another post when someone asked what would make the site better and i also said that you'd surprised how many people wouldnt cough up a £1.
Im not sure how many members there are but doing it that way would filter out some of the problems but most of all a charity or charities would benifit.Always looking for a bargain and to help0 -
As a good as that sounds I think it could cause a lot of extra costs and problems with the running of the site. Setting up different payment systems etc. It could also stop some genuine moneysavers from joining which wouldn't be a good thing. Plus I'm sure genuine spammers wouldn't let £1 stand in their way.
Perhaps a better way would be a postal password system of some sort. You register on the website, a letter is sent to the address that you give with a password in it. You need that password to authenticate your membership. Spammers aren't going to want to give their real address and won't be able to join the site witout doing so.
Just a thought.0 -
that would also create more work, people to post out passwords, plus postal costs etc0

True, but not as much as a payment system. Have you got any ideas?0 -
I think the easiest way is not to allow registrations with hotmail addresses.
I read that most spam and fraud comes from hotmail.0 -
You could also have a delay between signing up and being able to post or have a larger time limit between posting, I realise either could inconvenience people but I hate these idiots who come on and spam all over the place.0

I think what we are doing right now is very effective. We weed them out and expose them to all. I know they keep coming back under different names but there will always be someone around who wants to spoil things for others. As long as we all pull together to quickly and efficiently inform others they won't win. Well done everyone for spotting them and letting us all know. LL800

Hundreds of people are on hotmaill0 -
Yes - I'm on hotmail and would hate to lose out. How can you folks tell when its SPAM or their own referral. I often see messages saying 'referring your own site' or SPAM and havent a clue how you noticed it. I wouldnt know where to start.0
