  • That's what I mean.

    Really quite surprising.

3.1 million is the figure quoted with incomes over 90K. That's 5% of all people (62 million), not 5% of working adults (30 million).

It's more like 11% of working adults. Which seems high to me.

It seems high to me to and I am sure I heard something on the radio a while back that is was 1% ..... found something 2 years old but I still cannot imagine we have seen an 10% increase in high earners in the last 2 years given the economic climate?

The IFS site works on household incomes. Could they mean 3.1 million households with incomes over £90k? (so very high earning sole earners or couples with joint earnings exceeding this)

The problem with ASHE and the ONS is that it only counts employees on PAYE. So they reckon around 45K gross is top 10%, and 60K gross is top 5%.

But all the self employed businessmen and contractors are excluded.

And that group contains a significant number of high earners.....

And a very significant amount of low earners.
