smear results :(

  • Please try not to worry, they would have wipped you in for further treatment by now if it was a big concern. I had abnormal smears about 3 years ago and had to have 2 colposcopys and was then on a 6 monthly which is now a yearly programme. They do monitor you very closely these days although I dont think they give you signiifcant information on what the changes all mean which can be frightening. After my last smear which showed borderline changes it was explained to me by the hospital that stress and or whereabouts you are in your monthly cycle can cause these slight changes. They could give you a smear a few days later when you are for example less stressed and the result could come back perfect. I totally understand your worries but think a chat with the nurse or your gp should put your mind at rest.

kymrob, I'm sure they'll test you again sooner if you want.
I recently had a smear test and recieved a letter back saying there were abnormalities and I'd need retested in 6months (due next week) - it was a complete shock to get that letter let me tell you!!

You'd think they'd put in more information on these letters or phone people as it panics you otherwise, doesn't it :)

  • Hope you've managed to speak to your surgery by now, OP, and they've put your mind at rest. I had a borderline changes result a few years back and was retested 6 months on with a clear result.
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Don't be in shock. A borderline result does not mean a positive one! It means there are slight changes which may or not resolve themselves. Keep on doing your smear tests!

Ive had abnormal readings from when DD was born 4 years ago, they used to test me every 6 months and said thats its just to be precaucious. When I asked a nurse she said every woman will go through preiods of changed results and most of the time it rights itself, they are just checking for the small percent that dont.

If they havent called you back for 3 years then they dont think its an issue so you shouldnt worry, if they had any worries at all they would call you back for a follow up. I finally got a normal reading this summer after 3 1/2 years and 7 smear tests

I'll be honest, i cheered when the nurse said 'see you in 3 years' :rotfl: Just to put your mind even more at rest (as im a woman who likes to talk about this type of thing with other women :D) my friend used to get in big letters 'very abnormal readings' and has done for many years, I think shes down to a test every year now as it just never changes  and each time she gets the results she chucks it away with 'AGAIN, that nurse has seen my bits more than my OH!!'

  • My last smear was boardline too. I was told to go back in six months, which while they're not pleasant, it puts you at ease for the fact that it's being mointored. Phone your nurse / gp to be sure. I'm sure they know what they're talking about. And don't forget you can always go in for a smear anyway, you don't have to wait to be called up for it.

And don't worry - there isn't anything wrong it's just that it needs to be mointored.

    good luck. :) x
