Need to complain to school

This is one of those 'seems illogical' subjects to me.
If people find using an item in any way difficult or awkward and there is a suitable replacement, then they should be givent he option to use it.
I can't quite get my head around the fact that a large percentage of our population are expected to start off on a back foot simply because their natural ability is the opposite to the majority.
There should be left handed alternative as a rule for everything in life in my opinion. It's just ridiculous that there is not, especially in our techie and modern world of today.Herman - MP for all!0 -
My DD is left handed and I've never even considered asking the school for her to be given special treatment.
She uses the mouse in her right hand as well, never thought about that before either.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Is this a serious post... really?Love is the answer. At least for most of the questions in my heart,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?And how come it's so hard?
It's not always easy,And sometimes life can be deceiving,
I'll tell you one thing, its always better when we're together0 -
I'm 'very' left handed - I can't use my RH for anything - and I've never used anything 'special' for left handed people.
Scissors ARE easier if they're left handed, but that's pretty much the only thing I can think of. I don't write upside down - I turn the page so I'm writing up the table instead of across, so there's no smudging (and I still prefer to use a ballpoint pen than a fountain pen, just because my hand gets dirty otherwise!).
Honestly, your child will be fine.0 -
don't worry about it. I'm left handed and managed perfectly well at school without any left handed scissors etc.
Ditto.
I don't think even to this day I seen let alone used left handed scissors, I just turn the ones I have upside down and get on with it.Breast Cancer Now 100 miles October 2022 100 / 100miles

i have 2 lefty boys.. 1 is completely useless with his right hand the other gets by.
1 uses right handed scissors fine the other cant do it at all.
I think the only thing I ever did without thinking was gel pens.. they take forever to dry and they both smeared ink across their pages.. I sent a message to both schools apologising for their messy work and replaced the pens.
I got left handed scissors for them which they kept in their pencil cases but at nursery they had loads of lefty scissors and the got on just fine.
I am right handed.. very right handed I sometimes wonder if I would notice if my left hand fell off... and I use my right handed mouse in my left hand ALL the time.. I dont think I could use a mouse in my right hand. Apparently I have my cutlery the wrong way round too..
I think you are making mountains out of worm casts.. I would provide left handed scissors for your daughter if you think it is necessary but if she is managing with right handed ones let her be there is so much she will have to get used to it is better she does it now rather than struggling later on when her education might suffer.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Personally I think the OP is right to be concerned that her child's needs are being met by the school but I think the language used in the thread title is attracting harsh responses.
Some lefties are more left handed than others, if you google you can find some simple tests to see how left handed you are.
While many will not struggle in a RH world, there are no doubt a small percentage who will.
I don't think it's unreasonable to ask the school to consider if a young child is having any difficulties due to be LH. As I mentioned earlier, clashing arms just by where a child sits on a table is a pain for both RH and LH children and so easily addressed with a little consideration.
LH scissors are cheaply available in WHS. Some LH can use RH scissors but the problem is for cutting out along lines it's hard for them to see or if they find the paper folds but doesn't cut as they apply pressure. Easiest option IMO is to just pop a pair in child's pencil case.
I just remembered I had to buy a new gravy boat at home. I have one with a handle in the front and a spout to the left so pick up and pour from right to left. DD always whinged that she had to turn her left wrist at awkward angle and couldn't see what she was pouring properly. I just bought a stand boat that can be used by right or left handed. Also my salt/peppar mills are the ones you squeeze together not turn twist the top of as she found these awkward.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
