  • When you approached the teacher, what did you ask for and what was the reply?

I'm really shocked by this post. My brothers, husband and both children are left handed and I have never made any provision for them apart from buying gel pens with superfast drying ink to prevent smudging. I did buy left handed scissors once but they all use ordinary ones from Ikea which have symmetrical handles (don't know if that makes a difference). They all use their mouse with their right hands, and have the added advantage of being able to write at the same time.

OP I think you're treating being left handed as a disability and it isn't.

Have you seen this website, OP? It looks very helpful. One lady said she bought a copy of the book mentioned above for both herself and the school - seems like a good idea.

I am sure school will be receptive to a postive meeting, but I am not sure where the need to complain comes from.
  • OP, while it's worth seeing if the school can help, always remember it is a right handed world out there. The younger a left handed child can adapt to performing some tasks with their right hand, e.g. using a computer mouse, the easier their future life will be. I know, I'm left handed. The only problem I've ever really had is with scissors and that's easily solved by buying a pair of left handed/left grip scissors.

don't worry about it. I'm left handed and managed perfectly well at school without any left handed scissors etc.

    You want to complain?! Really?!?!

Im another lefty (yay!!) and apart from a couple of odd things like scissors, writing in ring binders and writing in exercise books when nearing the end I never had a problem with school equipment! At work I use a mouse with my right hand (feels rather odd of I use my left!) but at home when using my laptop I use my left hand on the built in pad!

With regards to writing, Im (apparently) quite rare for a lefty in the fact that I don’t write ‘upside down’

If the school don’t have left handed things I think it will be down to you to buy them – they are not in high demand therefore cant buy them in bulk to get the best prices (and left handed stuff is quite expensive for some reason)
  • Interestingly, Jimi Hendrix was a right handed guy who played a left handed guitar. Not that that has much relevance to this thread, sorry :p

About pens and pencils, sharpeners, etc. when i was at school everyone was expected to bring their own, is this not the case anymore? If not then no wonder schools are complaining of not having any money!

I find LH guitar easier than RH. Im RH though.

If at first you don't succeed, maybe bomb disposal isn't the best career choice.

DH and myself are RH. We have 2 children who are LH.

I must sound like the meanest parent but, apart from those LH/RH Stabilo? pens you buy, I've never made any other provision for them being LH. They both use the computer as RH and both play golf and hockey as RH.

There has never been a school issue connected to them being LH.

Do you think I should ask for a meeting or do this as a letter, to the headteacher or head of dept ?????

Neither. A friendly meeting with the teacher would probably more than suffice.

Being LH is not a disability.
It's wouldn't have not wouldn't of, shouldn't have not shouldn't of and couldn't have not couldn't of. Geddit?

I'm a lefty and I really don't see what adjustments would need to be made??
I use everything right-handed, apart from quick drying ink for my fountain pen and took the paper out of ring binders to write as they could be awkward.

Being left-handed is not a disability, but it seems by getting all these 'adjustments' you seem to think it is or be treating it like it is?

as an aside I work in IT (sys admin) and I've always used the mouse the 'right-handed' way with no problems.
