Any tips/suggestions to stop cats jumping onto kitchen worktops

Hi all

I have 4 cats that I love dearly but 3 out of the 4 (the other one is 19 and can't get up there) jump up and sleep on kitchen worktops and kitchen table! Not very hygienic (sp?) to say the least!

The youngest (15 months old) knows he's not meant to be up there (the look on his face when I catch him is priceless!)

Does anyone have any ideas/tips to prevent them jumping up there or discourage them to jump up?

Thanks in advance x

I think its keeping a water spray handy and making sure you use it every time until they learn. I've not done this myself but think my Mum has used this method on her somewhere in between 8 and 12 cats!
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

I just say "no" loudly and "bad boy" and if they don't jump down immediately pick them up and say "no" again quite forcefully and put them back on the floor. My two know they are not to go there but I've caught them very occasionally. Means you end up with disinfecting all the worksurfaces!
  • I did the same with a small water pistol, he didnt associate me with the squirting of the water so i didnt feel bad about doing it, and it was only a little squirt not as it they got soaked.

Worked after a few days, and to be honest it was quite fun ( for me not the cat )
My mind tends to wander............If found please return;)

    I can spell...................I just cant type:confused:

I gave up.... all cats do that.... LOL
  • thanks all.

I do say in a deep voice NO! and click my fingers. I do also pick them up and say no, then put them on the floor but to no avail. The water pistol is a good idea for 2 of them but the youngest likes water and is known for sleeping in the bathroom sink (I now shut the bathroom door!)

They do have a pillow to sleep on at night but choose the kitchen table!

Put down some sticky sided tape where they're getting. They hate walking on that stuff so much it should stop them from going back :)

I have a door to my kitchen so keep my Bengals out. One thing I cannot stand and thats animals in the kitchen and especially cats on worktops.
  • put a big dog on the work surface.
