The only real benefit is windscreen cover on fully comp, but even then, it may not be worth it.
Our runaround is worth £400, insured on £100 + £1000 voluntary excess (that took off over 35% of the cost). So we have no intention of ever claiming.

It needs a new windscreen now. Excess is £65, a new one fitted privately is £75, so it's not worth going through the insurance.

We don't have coutesy car, or legal cover, or protected ncd, so fully comp actually worked out cheaper than tpf&t, otherwise we would have gone for that.

Recovery after a fault accident is another advantage, what value you place on that I don’t know

Fc here as it was cheaper than going TPFT.

wouldnt claim on it.. the car is worth £220 on the weighbridge probably only get about 500 if that if i claimed minus my £250 excess would only get £250/300 tops id only be up about £80 plus any increase in premium over the 5 years makes it unecomonical to claim

  • Typically you will also get windscreen/ glass cover, personal possessions - so limited theft from the vehicle, personal accident - lost limb kind of cover and medical expenses

Thanks for all the comments, everyone. It's always interesting to read both sides of the argument.

Good thinking with the policy document, baa1. Have had a look and there's nothing really there that excites me.
It's all very well having things like a coutesy car, but given that anything worth claiming for would write off the car, we wouldn't get one anyway.
  • That would depend on the policy, the traditional courtesy car you wouldnt get in a total loss situation. Some insurers do offer an "enhanced" courtesy car under various names which you would still get for X days even for a total loss or stolen not recovered - normally about 14 days.

Its insurance, I'd be worried if it did excite you!
  • A fully comprehensive policy is more gentlemanly than a third party only policy. I for one would be embarrassed to have only a TPFT policy, or to have to show such documentation to an officer of the law.

An officer of the law is only interested in inspecting your "current certificate of motor insurance" - that document does not show what type of cover you have purchased, merely that you are covered for Road Traffic Act liability
