Have a problem and hope you can help.
Mums 81 and lives alone.she gets housing benefit and council tax benefit, pension credits and also attendance allowance.
Shes not at all well but wont give up her home.
we worry has she has had falls etc but is sprightly and positive.
The family have had a chat and think we have a way round it but dont know how she will lose out which we dont want her to do.
My daughter who works but is happy to move in with her grandmother so shes there at night and weekends etc and can help her with cooking cleaning etc.
how would this affect her money ...housing ben etc...
many thanks for any help.

Housing benefit does have non-dependant deductions however as your mum is in receipt of attendance allowance this will not apply. It looks like the same will apply to council tax benefit although not 100% sure how it works from going from 1 person to 2 in the household I would expect there to be something payable

if your mum has on her Pension Credit a premium called extra amount for severe disability (SDP) then that would stop0 -

council tax benefits/single persons discount
The 25% single person discount will be lost unless the granddaughter can be disregarded as a carer. If you and the person you are caring for live in the same property
You may be entitled to a Council Tax reduction if you are a carer and you:- live in the same property as the person you are caring for
- provide at least 35 hours a week of care
Also, the person you care for must have one of the following:- higher rate of the care component of Disability Living Allowance
- higher rate of Attendance Allowance
- an increased Disablement Pension
- an increased Constant Attendance Allowance
The person you are caring for can't be your spouse, partner or child under 18 years old.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
oh looks like it wont be as easy as we thought....:(0

Hi,
Your mother sounds like a great character!
I'm no housing/council tax benefit expert but I suspect they would be affected if your daughter moved in.
Would it be possible to get a life line fitted for your mum? Then if she has a fall, she can pull the cord as such!
Would it be possible for you and your family to work out a rota of visiting her in a morning/lunch/evening to check she is ok and help her get up and ready for bed.
Other than that, is there anywhere local that is a housing village? Somewhere that she can live independently but have the support around if she needs it.
I know this doesn't answer your original question but thought !'d suggest a couple of more options.
Also, approach the CAB to see if they can help at all - they have people who deal with this sort of thing regularly so should be able to advise you.
