Neighbouring Solar Panels?

If you were looking to buy a semi-detached house and the neighbour had 12 solar panels on the front roof, visible from the road, would that put you off buying?

  • No, unless it was older properties where it would really spoil the look. I don't think the panels detract from the look of the house at all.

All houses should have them in my opinion! Great, buy the house, fit panels of your own and enjoy.

I think its terrible that people would be put off by either buying a house with them on or for a neighbour having them on. Surely this should be a way forward and common place to have solar panels. I think every new build should be forced to have some sort of re-newable energy making product, or it can't be built. So no wouldn't put me off at all. Just my two-peneth.
  • It would make me wonder if the neighbour was some eco-wierdo who would go through my bins and tell me off for not composting my teabags or keep me awake at night from the sound of their loom weaving nettles into blankets.

But providing the rest of the place looks fairly normal, not too off-putting.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • It's good to hear other people's opinions, the more the better, opinions that is, not solar panels..

I think SP's will become more common place gradually, I just think they look a bit out of place. Twelve is alot, bit of an eyesore if I`m honest
  • I don't think solar panels are an eyesore at all -IMO it's the way forward. I share the opinion that all new houses/buildings should have them. My parents just had 16 panels fitted (big house), my brother and his wife are getting a similar number, and as far as I'm concerned it's brilliant. None of them are eco freaks btw, just concerned with rising prices.

I would think that maybe the neighbour is getting free electricity, whilst the company providing the panels gets the FITS.

The company will get more money but free leccie is not a bad deal.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • My dad's friend had between 8-10 SP's fitted last week and said it will take eight years to break even on what they cost to have fitted. That's a very slow return
  • I love them ... and no it wouldn't put me off - but then I've got some on the current house (not a rent a roof scheme - and not a raving loopy environmentalist either:rotfl: probably inbetween). As someone commented above I'm not so sure about putting it on the house we are buying which is older and the roof isn't so suited but in some ways couldn't imagine not having them.
