Ma - loved your pst. I lost my lovely mum nearly 2 years ago and was talking to a colleague who is struggling with the deaths of her parents last year. Of course people grieve in different ways but i said to her that i feel i owe it to mum to grab life and to carry on.

Of course i miss her - so much sometimes that the pain is physical and it stops me in my tracks but i can hear her saying "you've got to get on with it". My mum didn't bring me up to fall apart because she died and it doesn't mean i don't miss her. But a lot of my memories are smiley happy ones now - the sad stuff is shelved (well most of the time, i'm only human :p).

Shortly after mum died, my seriously mentally ill BIL took his own life (leaving 2 young children) and, in the same week, a close friend died of cancer at 52. the physically healthy took his own life and one who wanted to live couldn't. Makes you take stock. Life is precious and life is for living.

You should look into Spiritualism. It makes it a lot more bearable to think they haven't gone anywhere. Hi everybody - can I come in ? I'm out of sweeties, has anybody got any ?? ;)

Another Pratchett fan here, remember reading his books so many years ago now (started with the witches ones) and always remember being on a train and reading and giggling out loud...couldn't help myself. I'm sure folks thought I was nuts, but it also made others smile...I think because they looked at the book and recognised the title. :)
And now, of course, Terry is diagnosed with Alzheimers, a sad irony.
I lost my mum at quite a young age, she died in childbirth (but my little brother was saved) and not a day goes past when I don't miss her. Like others though, it made me determined to live life to the fullest. And to appreciate it. That hasn't always happened, and there've been times I've often wondered what's the point. One thing that has made me really appreciate life is that I'm a lot older now, with less ahead of me than behind. My lightbulb moment, if you like, was fairly recently....I have been swamped with debts and the struggle to repay them, and the stress of that, plus struggling to just live day to day, was really dragging me down to the point I could barely face the dawn.
But I got it into perspective, and realised I could refuse to let money dictate my happiness (or lack of it in my case!:D )and saw how it was also affecting my family...they were so worried about me.
Not saying it's easy, because sadly, we need money to exist in this society, and lack of it can be serious. But, I started looking at the non material things I had that made life worth living....my OH, my daughter, good health days among the bad, things like my sight, hearing and so on (so I can appreciate that sunset and listen to soothing music ) :)
and, I'll stop blethering on now, sorry *blush*

Another fan of the wonderful Terry Pratchett here - just returned from a trip to Cost Co where they've got his latest book for about £9.50 (I think it's the same price on Amaz0n). DH recommended I didn't buy it as then he'd have to think of something else to get me for my birthday next month- at least I know I'll get it soon :rotfl:

Mardatha - thought of you in CostCo - was browsing the cookery books and found a recipe for mushroom and kale lasagne <ducks quickly and leaves the room>

I am really enjoying the "appreciate life" posts albeit in a bittersweet way since so many of you have dealt with some cruel losses.
So thanks for sharing and I shall give my thanks for my beloved family and counting my blessings for each and every one of them.

So moving on before I start blarting :o anyone got a fool proof recipe for hummous without the tahini paste? I could trawl through posts on here and I will do if no one answers but I am being lazy :o:o:o

Feeling a little like I've lost my OS way somewhat. We aren't struggling financially so I hope I am not too out of place on this thread (I do normally lurk and on the other threads) but the OS life appeals to me enormously. I do cook from scratch all the time and baking is my therapy but just feel like I could be doing more maybe? I dunno.....think I just feel like there is something missing for me at the moment but really not sure what that is :o

Edinburgh lass - thanks for the link.....my DS would get a kick out of seeing the ISS but it's raining here and nothing but cloud <rollseyes> Will try again perhaps later in the week.

  • Bitsy, for houmous i just use a tin of chickpeas, about a teaspoon of chopped garlic but thats too taste, olive oil, lemon juice, and quite often some parsley

just blitz it all together and add as much or as little olive oil as you need to get the texture to how you like it, i season once i've tasted it

pops in 'cos feels all lonely :( can I post here! :D

I tried to get into TP's books as DH is an avid fan, The Wee Free Men is his fav, but I couldn't get into it.

I think OS is a way of thinking and learning, not necessarily in something we practise day in day out. I like to think I have the skills now to be able to really cope if things got very, very hairy

I agree with the baking is therapy idea too. If i'm stressed I'll bake. I don't think it's because I can indulge in something lush at the end of it ~ much :rotfl::D:o but more so doing something that I really, really enjoy.

I've got dried chick peas so I'll need to work out how to cook them I suppose :rotfl:
