Definitely a theme going here! The current car will get relegated to 'banger' when something goes wrong with it too heh!

I don't think there is a black and white answer to this. It very depends on your financial circumstances, job and lifestyle. The regulars on here harp on about bangernomics with their AA patrol fix it all skills. That's all well but plenty of people have no mechanical knowledge. Also their job may require a reliable car to get them tens of miles to and from work. These people would be better off with a new(er) car and a dealer warranty.

In ye olden days you either bought a car with cash, a bank loan or simple HP. Nowadays we have all sorts of fancy financial products, the key being deferring the cost, and making spangly cars more affordable to average Joe Public.

  • Some interesting views, thanks.

Seems a wide range with the majority spending a fairly small proportion on thier income.

My view is maybe skewed as I do mainly motorway miles to and from London and the cars I see are of considerable value.
  • one of my customers restored one of the 1st aston martins , he sold it back to the company for a huge sum and it's now in their museum
We're talking about brand new cars, not restoration jobs. I think you thoroughly got off the point there.

    thanks

Like in "ye olden days" like you say, vehicles were not as well designed or manufactured as current cars, and by current i mean even in the last 10 years. Many people think that a car with over 80k miles is going to be a liability and be more trouble than its worth. If a decent car is serviced and looked after it should not need much.

You can chuck alot of money into a brand new car and sometimes it's not worth it.

    my humble opinion

Imagine how many £100 bangers you would go through.. And then the annoyance of it all when you inevitably failed on the motorway making you late for work/home.

I dont think anyone, especially "empty pockets" would consider a car with a value of £100 to drive up and down a motorway everyday. Thats ridiculous.
  • Had plenty of 'bangers' albeit a little more expensive than £100.

A new car is just as likely to fail if not maintained properly, if anything, a much more serious failure.

Regardless, this isn't about reliability, it's about guaging the varied amount of income thrown at a vehicle.

As said earlier, most mortgage lenders will allow you a set percentage and most are happy to stay within that limit.

Always makes me wonder when I see M5s, S class, Range Rover Sport, S5's etc etc.

My FREE Fiesta carried me approx 70,000 miles on the over a period of approx 4 years (mainly M27 motorway miles) and the only problems in that time were when I accidentally left the lights on and a flat tyre - its all about good maintenance!

The £275 rover has given me no dire problems for the last 18 months of 140mile round trips apart from a lose spark plug and a snapped plastic connector on the clutch cable (replaced at the roadside by the RAC)

What a car costs is not an indication of its reliabilty....

There's also a another major issue with a brand spanker other than immediate cash loss and that's relliability.

It's very often the 1st owner who has all the issues of faults, particularly electrical, and recalls by the manufacturer.

The 2nd owner has usually escaped these, plus the car will have done it's natural running in cycle and is likely to be at peak performance and economy. ;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
