When mine have had the runs I've always starved for 24 hours followed by scrambled egg. Seems to work well for us. Goes without saying if you notice any blood in there or he doesn't appear to be getting any better you will need to take him to the vets, in fact, with you saying he's recently been in the kennels it may be worth the trip anyway - lots of gastro type bugs doing the rounds at the moment and he may just need some antibiotics to get him over it.0

Always starve mine if they have the runs badly, never had a problem yet.
However, goes to show why you shouldn't ask for medical advice (for pets or humans) on an internet forum, huge differences of opinion.
If pups not better this morning, vets for sure.2 angels in heaven :A0 -
i woke up @ 6am to the smell in the bedroom.... got up during the night, put him out the back, went back to bed, and closed the door over! argh!
he done more out on hi walk, still total fluid, but no blood.
Have not fed him this morning, and am gonna try him on rice and chicken tomorrow, if not then the vets im off to.Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?0 -

If he's still like this tomorrow I'd take him to the vet before even trying the chicken and rice.
Hope he starts to get back to normal very soon0 -
Not sure where you are from hun, but my sis in law went through this last week with her Springer, she's in Lincolnshire and the vets told her that there was a particularly nasty gastro bug all over the county, I agree with Walwin, I wouldn't progress to the chicken and rice I think I'd just head straight for the vet. If you can take a poo and wee sample with you all the better. You can never be sure whats lurking in kennels and whilst your dogs have had the jabs others may not have.
Hope he feels better0 -
I think most (if not all) kennels are required to make sure the dogs are up to date on vaccinations, but there are still plenty of bugs that can't be vaccinated against and it's the kind of environment where a tummybug could be easily spread (shared grass areas, confined, lots of dogs coming and going, germs spread via the staff's shoes/clothes, etc.). I agree that I'd be seeing the vet either tonight or tomorrow, if the upset tum is still pure liquid then dehydration will set in quicker.
I personally don't rate Winalot food very high in terms of quality but that's probably a whole other conversation. One thing that may not be helping is that cheap foods like this rarely specify their ingredients - it's "meat and animal derivatives", where x% is chicken/lamb/beef but the remainder could be anything. Ditto with "cereals" instead of wheat/oats/maize/etc. - if they don't name a meat or cereal then they have the flexibility to change ingredients according to whatever is cheaper to buy at the time of ordering the raw ingredients. This can cause problems when it gets to the dog as the ingredients vary from batch to batch and while one batch may agree with a dog's tummy, the next batch could have different ingredients which don't agree with them. A dog with a wheat or lamb intolerance could be fine in a batch containing tiny amounts of wheat or lamb but if wheat or lamb was cheap at the time of manufacturing the next batch, and was used in higher quantities, the dog could suddenly have an upset tum without changing the brand/flavour of food.
I wouldn't really want to chop and change a dog's diet when it was suffering an upset tum but I think I would be tempted to cut out the Winalot and stick to plain chicken for the next few days (with or without rice) - it won't harm for a few days to not be eating a complete dog food. If you prefer feeding wet food then perhaps look at the Wainwrights range that Pets at Home stock - often on offer (3 for 2, BOGOF, etc) and it's supposed to be similar to a premium wet food called Naturediet - but cheaper. It's the trays you want to look at rather than the pouches, as the latter are pricier. Ingredients are specified, it's high in actual meat (as opposed to derivatives, which are all the cheap leftover bits of an animal like beaks, hooves, etc.) and better quality than cheap tins.0 -
Thanks for the replies.....
I stay south of Glasgow.
He has been fine from this morning..... my OH is home all day, so she is keeping a good eye on him, and talking him for a walk near every hour......
