There is a special phone number posties can ring to report if they think one of their customers is being scammed. It is supposed to be promoted to posties freely. But when my postie asked his boss for it, he was told it didn't exist, and it was up to the customer to ring customer services. AS IF! They don't realise, that is the whole problem.

    The number is 0207 239 6655.

One of my gripes with the Royal Mail is that they don't publicise this. Another is they insist the customer him or herself has to report the scams - but they are the least likely to do so.

    It's a figleaf.

Any postie who has tried using the number, please post and let us know what happened!:T

thats the number for " The IB"in RM speak

    also at securityhelpdesk@royalmail.com

its not specifically for customers mail
its with regard to anything regarding RM security.
    so RM property,mail procedures etc
the reason RM managers dont want posties calling it is they dont want IB or the higher managers to know what goes on day to day in an RM office

This is such a difficult subject and there are too many hurdles to jump over to get it fixed!

It's clear Royal Mail are legally bound to deliver anything posted. It's clear Power of Attorney is expensive and difficult to obtain. It's clear these scammers aren't going to stop.

So maybe it's up to the Government to allow RM to create maybe a Vulnerable People's Postal List where families can apply through a magistrate or county council to have a vulnerable family member put on the list (with all evidence presented etc) and this allows all mail to be redirected to a 'caretaker' who can scan it for scams.

This is an issue that clearly needs to be taken more seriously by the Government - it breaks my heart to think of what you are all going through.

    and who pays for that?
seriously, thats the bottom line in RM now.

This scamming of the vulnerable elderly makes me sick to the core. And yet nothing ever seems to get done to trace and jail the filthy people behind it.

Surely it would be quite easy to catch these scum if the Police pulled their finger out?

Custardy - sorry if I appear slow, but what does IB stand for? And what would happen if a postie DID say a customer was getting too much mail and being scammed?

you would need to lobby your MP
    RM have obligations
BTW the MPs in the main wont care as they are desperate to get RM carved up and privitised.
Also you are aware of downstream access mail?
how would you deal with that?

What is downstream access mail? Is it another danger, or a way of helping?

IB is the like the RM police, official name is Post Office Security Investigation Services (POSIS)
Downstream Access (DSA) is mail dumped by people like TNT/CityPost etc at the the RM Mail Centre for delivery through the RM network. This is subsidised by the taxpayer as RM have to deliver these items at a loss. More likely to receive scam mail through one of these firms. Look in the area where the stamp is and that will tell you if its DSA or RM.

I would say the IB wouldnt care
their remit is to protect RMs property and the integrity of the mail.
