Thanks 1nmyopinion - there's so much good stuff in your post that I think I might save a copy to refer back to! (And will definitely take your comments about bouquet on board - I've been umm and ahhing for too long about what colour I should go for!)

Look on MArtha Stewart - there are all different colours on there. If you want white though, make sure you put a 'collar' of green leaves on so you can distinguish between your flowers and dress.

That's the same with us. I don't want to spend a great deal on food and so am considering canapes and buffet. Just wondered the reasoning behind it that was all so I could take it on board in my planning

I'm the opposite - I would rather have a long sit down meal than a buffet! Ours will be starters, sorbet, main, dessert and then coffees! Sitting down and chatting over a meal is always my favourite part of the day so it makes sense that it will be part of the wedding too!

Interesting how people see things in different ways. A sit down meal was the last thing we wanted...Mainly because we didn't want the hassle of place cards, table plans and so on. We also wanted a more up-beat social atmosphere and didn't want our wedding blending into all the rest of the weddings our guests had ever attended. Just goes to show, different strokes for different folks and all thatsugarwalsh wrote: »I'm the opposite - I would rather have a long sit down meal than a buffet! That's was my thinking too. If I sit down, then it's with those on that table. I want to mingle, ha ha and get to natter to everyone.
I do love meals, but more small ones where everyone is on the same table, a buffet just seems the right way for us to go both cost wise and socially too.
It is good to see other people's views though as I do think people come up with many things you don't consider/think of.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -

Just "food" for thought
but doing a buffet doesn't necessarily make things any better. I've been to weddings that had a seating plan and then called you up in turn to the buffet - and I've been to weddings where there's been a buffet...but people have just sat on a table and stayed there all night.
It was for this reason, amongst others, that we only had 1 chair to every 3 people at our wedding...Meant people kept socially mobile and we (bride and groom) could whizz around everyone much easier

We only have 60 day guests coming - 16 of which are kids, so it will be fairly intimate. I've worked in catering at many events - including weddings - and I think I tend to see buffets as an easier/cheaper option for the caterer. Plus I can easily put a buffet together at home for a few yet, whilst I enjoy cooking, I wouldn't cook a full meal for more than about 16. Therefore I see it as a treat to have a sit down.
It is really down to personal preference, but I would say that the weddings which you attend where everything seems fun and relaxed tend to be the ones which are organised to within an inch of their lives! It really is a case of planning = relaxing on the day in my opinion. Even if that means planning 1 chair to every 3 guests!!

I've been to a couple done like that and one where you could just sit/stand wherever. You can do what you want, really

This was a concern for us - that we wanted really good food and thought that buffets come across as being "cheap" or "easy" or just not as good as a "sit down" meal. That's why we went for "option X" and did neither. We had rolling canapes, dish food and cooked to order stir fry and kebabs...we did have a kind of desert buffet, though...but this was just to supplement the other deserts that were circulating. So our guests didn't sit down, but they still had a whole stack of fancy food that was clearly not cheaper / easier than a sit down

Wanchai, generally, yes. Idiophreak your option sounds really good!
I didn't mean buffets always seem cheap, just from a catering point of view I think they are the easier option, which is why I wouldn't choose it. It's just my own opinion, and I know with some thought buffets can be fantastic.

I would love to go for canapes and a buffet, as our proposed sit down meal is costing £46 a head  but (a) my mum would kill us and (b) I feel that there would be no 'focal point' of the reception e.g. the speeches etc. But maybe I'm being silly.7 Feb 2012: 10st7lbs
