If you are worried about the legal situation, then I believe it's only illegal if you're actually sharing and uploading files. So as soon as their downloads are finished, make sure they stop seeding them. As a safeguard, ask them to install PeerBlock from www.peerblock.com
No it's illegal to download the files as well.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -

Yep, the man is right. Much as my logical argument above shows that really it can be done without really infringing copyright, it is still ultimately completely illegal.
The only place you can legally download a BBC show for free is BBC iPlayer. For an ITV show, ITV player... Surely if this guest is bed bound for a long period then old Dr Who episodes will not last long unless he's watching them over and over.
Chances are he's looking for other things to download that may not belong to the BBC such as films and other TV series.
Safest thing is to get him some books from the library. You never know he might even enjoy reading.0 -
Not anymore - The UK has finally caught up with most of the world and format shifting is now legal (obviously for personal use only)
I found this on the subject, is it actually legal or in the process of becoming legal?

NO, as the law stands, time shifting is allowed for Broadcast only, under something called fair dealing, which means to a certain degree.Mansion TV. Avoid at all cost's :j0 -
If pirating means broadcasters no longer have the funds to create shows like x factor, Gavin and Stacey, the only way is essex, celebrity juice, the jeremy kyle show, hollyoaks, the model agency, streetmate (or anything with Davina McCall), made in chelsea, fresh meat, show and tell, the wright stuff, big brother, then I'm all for it.0

Unfortunately pirating is more likely to mean that they end up making more of this cheap crap.If pirating means broadcasters no longer have the funds to create shows like x factor, Gavin and Stacey, the only way is essex, celebrity juice, the jeremy kyle show, hollyoaks, the model agency, streetmate (or anything with Davina McCall), made in chelsea, fresh meat, show and tell, the wright stuff, big brother, then I'm all for it.0 -
Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion; MSEers have solved another problem! :T :T :T

Not sure if it's all there or not but...
My guest is now happily watching Dr Who on blinkbox and has agreed not to use the file-sharing thing again. I'm happy too because my internet connection is much better, and hopefully the problem has been sorted out fast enough to ensure that there will be no expensive repercussions (so very MSE!
