if the d: drive is a recovery partition or you have recovery disks, I think I'd be inclined to try a factory restore using it/them after any data has been saved by popping the hdd into a caddy and connecting to another pc. If that don't work, then I'd be looking at probably a new one (but a "new" one could mean something half-decent from ebay as opposed to new-new

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

there is a recovery partition on d: but with it constantly freezing i wasn't sure if i'd be able to get that far ?
i turned the laptop on this morning & it loaded from the boot CD, got as far as the main menu where it let me select miniXP & then loaded that up .... then promptly froze again before i could look into anything ! it seems the longer it's left alone the further it gets before freezing (cools down maybe ?)Same !!!!!! ~ Different Day :silenced:0 -
on a positive note i've at least got a bootCD now which is there for future needs (2 other XP desktops at home)
stupid question ... do i need an alternative bootCD for windows 7 o/s ? or this hiren's version suitable ?Same !!!!!! ~ Different Day :silenced:0 -
take it to pieces, reseat hard disk/ram/wireless card, try it without battery installed, check fan is spinning and clean the fan area if fluffy!!

no, the boot disk is independant of op sys - it loads into and runs from RAM, hence why it's so handy to have.
Try the good advice from closed above, but it does sound more like the damage has been done with the graphics chip/mobo

It sounds like it's overheating and the safety trip is activating to me.
Clean the fan as closed suggests and you'll probably find no harm has been done.I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.0 -
just wondered, is there a way of connecting the poorly laptop to my working laptop to carry out any checks/tests ?
