my son's sony vaio laptop is acting oddly. i'm reasonably sure it's not infected but i can't carry out any checks as it keeps freezing up. o/s is xp sp3.
it has frozen in windows explorer & safe mode & part way into start up & part way into check disk. i can't get into it for long enough to try anything much at all. i was considering ccleaner, check disk & defrag to start with but am concerned it's hardware not software.
any suggestions that stop short of "buy him a new laptop" would be most welcome

some of them with nvidia graphics have overheating problems
could try chkdsk c: /F
defrag wont help!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
if it's still not playing after trying closed's suggestion, might be worth trying a bootCD like hiren's or puppy linux, just to see if the rest of the hardware is working ok or the hdd and/or windows installation is goosed .......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

hi, it's got both c & d drives should i try run chkdsk on both ?
also, what's the /F for ?Same !!!!!! ~ Different Day :silenced:0 -
could do, the c check will need to be run after a reboot.
fix!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
struggling to get it to start properly, doesn't get very far before freezing so chkdsk is looking unlikely.
GJ. downloading bootCD now & will then copy onto a CD.
is what to do with it obvious ?Same !!!!!! ~ Different Day :silenced:0 -
^^^ you are downloading an .ISO image - it needs to be burned to a cd as such, using nero, imgburn or any other burning prog that will burn .ISO images. On powering up the lappy, enter BIOS and set the boot order to cd drive first, pop the disk in the drive, then save changes and exit BIOS - the lappy will then boot from the cd. If you've done hiren's, choose the miniXP option to give you a familiar windows environment in which to work

unfortunately everytime i try to boot from the CD nothing happens except for once where it got to the menu, allowed me to select miniXP option ..... then promptly froze up again

i'm going to try again tomorrow but need to break off & do some work now so please don't think i'm ignoring anyone if i don't reply soon.
just wondered, is there a way of connecting the poorly laptop to my working laptop to carry out any checks/tests ?Same !!!!!! ~ Different Day :silenced:0 -
beginning to sound more like a mobo/graphics chip fault if it's freezing from booting with hiren's

the laptop's about 4 years old. is it false economy to repair it or are other bits likely to start falling off ?Same !!!!!! ~ Different Day :silenced:0
