There are lots of annoying little glitches on any sat nav, but if you know about this "new" road i don't see why it is a problem for you?

I never use my sat nav on roads I know.

I think you're missing the point. The OP knows that this road exists but isn't on the Garmin map, so how can he trust the maps for places that he doesn't know?

It's not just that. I know the area but my wife doesn't. The new road cuts off old roads. So you could be going to a village using the satnav only to find the road blocked by the new road and have to find a way round.
It's not only that road. We've just been on holiday and a number of time it directed us down a one way street the wrong way and once looking at the road signs had been that way a few years.
    I just isn't reliable.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1410 about 4 months ago. On the first test trip out with it, within 250 yards of home it instructed me to drive down a pedestrian precinct. Not a recent change, it was pedestrianised in the 1970s!

    I e-mailed Garmin. Never got a reply.

Satnav is great but you do have to double-check with road signs and brain. 2-3 months ago I bought a Ford Focus with built-in satnav which does avoid that road. On the downside, the voice is annoyingly mid-Atlantic and the moving map sometimes puts me driving on the right.

I'm tempted to try a trip with both going and see if they agree - but perhaps that would be too distracting...
I need to think of something new here...

Just an update I received an email from Garmin..

"Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.
I will be happy to assist you with your enquiry. The current version of mapping is 2012.20 so please ensure that this is the correct version that you have installed. If so then this is in fact the current version of mapping that we currently have.

We don't actually manufacture the mapping software ourselves, but it is provided by a company called Navteq, who are regarded to be the best in the business.
In order to obtain this mapping Navteq travel around the country collecting data which then need to be transferred into computer data and converted into our software. This does require the roads to be fully completed so this data can be collected, and I am sure you can appreciate that this can take some time and so there may be some new roads or places which don't appear, or there might be some discrepancies in the mapping.
Navteq themselves have set up a live server which you can access to check to see what is already on their database, and to inform them of any changes if you have noticed any discrepancies with the mapping, which can be found at Navteq "

Yesterday when I connected my satnv to the pc I was told of a map update so I updated it to the latest maps to 2012.30. And the road is still not on there. What is really madderning is I had to go to a house on a new estate that wasn't there a year ago only about a dozern houses down this one road and it was on the Garmin. But a 16 mile bypass isn't. Does that sound right?
