Windows Defender problem

I do not seem to be able to use Widows Defender, it has been on my computer since it came out,(updated), and runs daily, however about 5 days ago I checked to see if it was working and tried to access it via my desktop icon, but every time I try this I get the following window popping up:-
"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and support on how to start a service manually"
If I can't get it to run, how can I look @ help and support? Restarting the computer changes nothing.
This has been happening for the last 5-6 days, computer was last virus scanned 4 days ago, nothing was found.
Am on XP home edition, AVG, Spybot S&D, A-squared 2 free, Ad-Aware SE personal.
Any ideas why it should just stop?
Thanks

It's happened to a lot of people, just download the latest version & uninstall/reinstall0
-
I thought about doing that, but thought I would ask on here first, is there a link to the download or should I just Google it?

You can get it from here.0

Right that is where I have got it from, but it does not seem to be in my, "add/remove progs, and when clicking on the desktop icon I get the following window:-
"This instalation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product support vendor"
I uninstalled the old one before I downloaded the new one.
I also restarted the computerDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
OK, so you've got rid of the old version - I take it that it was in your Add/Remove programs before you uninstalled it?
What's the name of the file you downloaded & what size is it? - just hover the mouse over the downloaded icon & it'll give you the info.0 -
Yes to your first question.
X64-1.msi
7.05MB
I think that might only be the install tool?
Because it also has:- Title:- Instalation Database.
And " this installer database contains the logic and data required to install Windows Defendetr"
But how do I now install WD?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Why have you downloaded the 64-bit version? You only need that if you've got a 64-bit operating system!derrick wrote:X64-1.msi0 -
Don't know, I was on the page you linked to, although I did it before you supplied the link as I Googled it.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0

Yep, it should be the 'normal' version you want - about 5Mb0
-
Ok I now have it up and running. Thanks.
But when clicking on the desktop icon it takes me through the maintainence prog, whereas before I could open WD at the home page by double clicking the icon.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0
