Yes - that was me! I re-use seed compost from failed germinations and also the stuff left over after pricking seeds out. I can't say how long to zap it for though as it depends on how much you put in and the power of your microwave, but I start with a couple of minutes and keep checking it until you see steam - or can tell that it is piping hot.
I got the idea for doing this from my son's pre-school - they have to microwave used egg boxes and toilet roll inners to sterilize them as they are not allowed to use them otherwise - health and safetly gone mad!
Also, I remember my midwife saying something about microwaving knickers (after washing them!) if suffering from thrush - to prevent re-infection I think......just how did we get onto this subject from seed compost?0 -
Lol Jap... a thread of it's own that one I think.....
I found perlite today in Homebase - £4.99 a bag..... I nearly dropped with the shock. That's as much as I paid for 9 packets of seeds & delivery!!!(ok, 30p less) Unfortunately we don't have a wilkinsons nearby .... but perhaps the allotment shop might have some?

My sister has sent me an email with a link to a website offer for cheap compost. It seems to be just a local offer but if you live in the area it might be useful. the website is http://www.garden-scene.co.uk/docs/offers.htm she says she took the voucher in and got the three for £5 OK0

All you need to do is print this page, fill in your details on the voucher above and bring it to The Garden Centre, Garden Scene, Chapel Croft, Chipperfield, Herts. WD4 9EG. If you like what you see and are pleased with the compost we hope you will forward this email to your friends and spread the good word about our Garden Centre0

Did a search within the Garden Forum but couldn't find this posted.
In April's issue of Gardener's world there is a free packet of seeds (mixed leaves, chives and tomatoes) + a voucher for free compost. Have just planted my seeds and hopefully will be able to find a stockist that has the compost.
Looked on Gardener's World website and the stockists seem to be certain Wilkinson's, Asda and Focus. May be more. Might be worth looking on their website before you buy to see if there is a stockist near you.

The voucher is for £2.99
Our garden centre is selling it for £3.99
Not what I'd call a freebie!!!
It's in a tiny bag and you add water and it swells up.
Have planted some of my seeds too.0 -
I thought it says it is free and it's value is £2.99. Don't have to pay anything0

Thanks for that, i'd seen the magazine but thought that i'd have to go to a garden centre and was so surprised when i clicked the link and saw that i could get it from Wilkinsons (£1.99).0
