Scone Recipe from a 1950's cook book

    8oz [225g] self raising flour
    pinch of salt
    1 1/2 oz [35g] margarine
    1 1/2 oz [35g] sugar
    2 oz [50g] dried fruit/ saultanas/chopped glace cheeries:D
    1/4 pint [150ml] milk

    Oven at 220C/425F/Gas Mark 7
    grease tray
Put flour, salt and marg in bowl and rub together till it resembles fine beadcrumb's
Add in the sugar and fruit and give a stir through, then add the milk and mix till it start's to stick together
Take from the bowl and knead lightly to form a soft dough
Roll out to desired thickness remember they do rise and cut out round's and place on tray
    Bake for 25 min's

For a plain scone leave out fruit For cheese scone leave out sugar and replace fruit with same weight of cheese

:DThere you go hun, the scone recipe I keep coming back to, it's old basic and it work's, but what I have found over the year's is you don't need to do a lot at the kneading stage, 'cause if you over knead it you end up with tough, chewy scone's :o and yes I learnt that one myself the hard way, also I would start checking on the scone's at 18 min's, also if you do a second batch to go in after the first lot you need to take of 5 min's from the cooking time because of the oven being that hot. hth

........... the plan at the moment is that I take him down around 5.30/6 am, come back and then go back down again around 10 am, but that may well change in the morning ............. :o:o

Well, the plan did change. Alan got up at 3.15 am as he was awake and he watched S'land match from sky+ and had a leisurely breakfast, then told me to stay in bed as, he said, it was silly for me to be getting up at that time and he would be ok. He went down to car boot at 5.30 am. I was still in bed when I heard him coming back in the house at 11.30 am ........ in agony with the other side of his back, but not sciatica luckily. It had just gone on him, so he had to pack everything away, with a mate helping, and come home. He put ice on it but was unable to walk when he tried to get up to take dogs out, but I said don;t be silly I will take them out, so I got ready and took them for a walk, nearly getting blown away in the process  He is a little better now, so hope it will ease over the day

Steve and Andy are in London for the weekend and are enjoying themselves :j :j

I promised to get some ciggies and shopping for Linda so will pop round to hers about 3pm and then to Mr T, hoping for a few whoopsies ;)

I can smell scones Boult just from the recipe - as you say, the old recipes are tried and tested and are more often than not the best

You really had me puzzled as to what you used in the Twinks Boult and then it suddenly hit me - muesli :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Alan is feeling a lot better now, the ice and hot water bottle helped a lot, and he has gone to bed quite comfy. I popped along to Mr T's to get Linda's ciggies and fruit, hoping for a few whoopsies but nothing worth having :( Been around to Linda's for a cuppa and a chat and now settled in for the night in my pj's :j :j
