I had a terrible time with n power, below is my post from the complaint letter success forum which explains the problems:
I am now with Powergen and I can't praise them highly enough.
Same here.
I spent six months trying to get NPower to supply me with gas and found their customer service on the whole polite, but inneffectual - nothing ever got done.
In the end I got fed up and went with Powergen.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
NPower are horrible. I know so many people who were with them and hated them. They seem to send everyone outrageous bills. A friend of my husband used to work at NPower and she said they make up charges. We're actually having as problem paying them back, they won't let us pay anything because we can't afford £90 a month. Stay away from NPower.0

I'm with npower for electric and pay by quarterly billing and they are very expensive. I don't want to pay by direct debit so I have never checked if that would make much difference relative to the other companies but I do know that when they announced their last set of price decreases they neglected to mention that in regions where they have a strong presence the decrease was minimal and for that reason alone never mind anything else I am going to be switching.0

We are stuck with Npower because we are in a private rented house and not allowed to change. Not been impressed with them so far and we have only been with them since March.0
