New Heating System - Fair Quote?

Hi everyone... I am new to moneysavingexpert.com and was wondering whether you could help me out.

I am a first time buyer of a house which needs remedial works (only chance of getting on the ladder!) and have been asked by mortgage company to provide reports/quotes for works needed. I instructed a well respected corgi supplier to access and if need be quote for works needed. Having recieved the quote of £6989.00 PLUS VAT:eek: I was left a little deflated to say the least. What I would like to find out is a reasonable cost for such works (spec for company detailed below). I must mention that the property is a good size 4 bed mid terrace which already has a part gas central heating and part storage heating system which has been advised to be non suitable to supply the whole property. The property is located in the north west area so its not as if I have to pay higher labour prices as in other areas (London).

Spec
38kw floor standing combi boiler - any ideas which one this may be? all I have found are wall hung and cant see why it has been spec'd as floor standing? To be reloacted in kitchen as apposed to back bedroom (good idea I think).
12 Radiators
Associated Pipework
Installation

£6989.00 PLUS VAT

The also advised works needs for Service Water Plumbing:confused: what is this?
Spec
Replacement of lead work within service
Replacement of all >50mm diameter waste systems
£954.00 PLUS VAT

and last but not least...(BTW I am lost at this point!:rotfl: ) External Drainage Service
Spec
Replacement of cast Soil Vent Pipe with 110mm plastic, and associated branches
Replacement of existing cast hoppers and feeding wastes, also reinstatement of gully benching:confused: what does all this mean?
£980.00 PLUS VAT

If you managed to make it this far, thank you very much for your time and any advice you can share would be extremely appreciated.

  • My son has just had a new heating system installed which included new combi boiler and all new radiators (11) and pipework this involved some new radiator postitions and installation of a new gas fire (lounge) and gas air blower (kitchen) the total cost was £3000 but did not include cost of new gas fire.

I would suggest you get a number of quotations.

I thought the price was excessive and have been advised by famliy member that the quote should be more around the £3000-£4000 mark. Mind if I ask where your son lives? and if it is close to north west what the company was?

I would estimate between £4k-£4.5k tops for the work you have posted above.

Nile - my reply seems to have disappeared, is it possible that I was replying while you were moving it?

It appears you have two threads with similar titles. I replied on the other thread. Hopefully, Nile or someone can merge them.

  • I intend to have GCH fitted to a 4 bed end of terrace later this year.

Pricing up the parts from Screwfix I make it about £1400 for parts including boiler and 10 radiators. How much do you think a plumber needs to earn? Get a Corgi man to connect the gas.

You should be able to find someone who is not VAT registered.

    :)
