Who pays for a funeral if you have no money?

Just an inquiry about who would pay for a funeral for a family member if nobody has the money for it?
Is there any money you can get which doesnt need to be paid back or is it just the social fund which has to be paid back that can help?
Would it make a difference if the person responsible for paying was over 65 and a widow on a basic pension with no other savings etc?

I have found the DWP to be pretty flexible in this instance, and they are willing to overlook that another relative may be able to afford it.0 -

My years in the care industry must have all been a dream then! I see it all the time, someone passes away and although they have family the homes are left to make arrangements. All we are asked is 'Are the family willing to pay?', and if we say no they don't ask any further.0 -

The sad Truth is a good majority of working people could not afford to bury themselves if they died.
This is probably the best definition of poverty I know, not been able to afford to die, never-mind live.
