Really no point running anything from a CD drive, CHKDSK /r/f might fix it for a few boots, but it's going to do all sorts of weird and wonderful things like freeze/crash/refuse to start/refuse to start applications/loose data etc etc etc until the hard drive is replaced.
Those Dell Mini's should of come with DVD's though, so all that needs done is a replacement HDD and restore from the discs0 -
See if you can get it to Boot from USB. Try Ubuntu
If everything else is ok, you might be able to clone the HDD.
Thanks. I will try that tomorrow but don't understand the bit about cloning the HDD?
Also would you be kind enough to offer a link to a reputable site for downloading Ubuntu?

I have already done so. The dark blue type indicates a link(Click on the word 'Ubuntu' in post #13).
Will guide with with cloning the HDD when we get to it.0
