HTC Desire - locked in aeroplane mode

I have a HTC Desire on Orange. Try as I might, I cannot get it to come out of aeroplane mode. The plane symbol is no longer showing at the top of the screen, yet if I try to make a phone call or send a text it tells me to switch aeroplane mode off first.
I have tried switching it off both through the settings and by holding down the on / off key. I have taken the battery out, the SIM out, the memory card out. Switched it off and on many times and still in aeroplane mode.
Anyone know what else I can try?
I have downloaded no apps at all. I bought the phone last November, so the SIM is less than 1 year old.

No. I'm busy backing all the data up now. Husband reckons I should nip down to the Orange shop, but looking online I think they won't be able to do anything.0
