    maybe it needs formatting?
yes good point, I have just installed a new motherboard and processer but I still had to format my HD before it would work.

  • ok diagram says if jumper is at leftmost = ds master, next to that = cs enabled, and next to that = cap limit, jumper removed = ds slave. i have taken jumper off for slave as i think that is what i need (?), turned back on and its as before. how can io try to format?
  • If you run the fdisk and then format then put xp on 120gb should take about 1hour 20mins or you could just do a quick format with your xp disk

Try CS first as should not really have to format it unless corrupted or invalid file format (unlikely).

    Does it show in diskmgmt.msc

Is it on the end of the ide cable, or in the middle?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Formatting? Open Disk Management (see post 11), then right-click the drive (probably Disk 1) and choose Format.
  • yes it shows in diskmgmt. sorry what do you mean by try cs?

I have a 2nd drive on my pc that will not detect in Slave mode, but will in CS (Cable Select - basically auto) mode.

It's worth a try to avoid formatting it unless ur not bothered about losing the data.

If your new drive is SATA and the old one is only ATA, then it's a slightly different cable and the master has to be at the end (I think...)

  • ATA drive - looks like the OP misquoted the model no. - 6L120P0
