Help! Pluggedin new slavehd butnot working

Options
Hi there, I'm hoping someone techie (or more techie than me, its not hard!) could give me a hand.

basically i bought a new 120gig hard drive about 6months ago to replace one that failed (not the main one an extra one). Anyway for various reasons i didn't bother to install it. Now tonight i have finally got round to it and repeated the steps i did before- just plugged it in and thought windows would find it, but it is not working. The disk does not display in device manager, but when i check in device manager it is there and says it is working properly. It says maxtor 6L10p0 if that helps.

Have i missed something or is it just faulty?

Any help gratefully received!

thanks

Does it show in device manager or not?

If so, does it have an exclamation mark next to it?

If not, have you tried updating driver thru device manager or add new hardware in control panel?

    What os?

Try changing the jumper settings on the HD.

I agree. Sometimes on some drives, slave does not work right and you have to set it to auto. Don't know why, I've got one like that.

  • sorry how do i do that?
  • at the back of the HD you will see a switch, this is to change it from master to slave and visa/verser then try it again and the pc should pick it up.

There should be a diagram on the sticker or near the jumpers. sometimes there are letters inscribed under/above the pins themselves to indicate which is which.

  • you have to have a master and a slave they cannot be both
