has she had a full assesment with a paedatrician and has the educational pychologist been contacted through the schools. i have a son with aspergers and dyspraxia, and she has some of the traits of this.
autism, adhd, dyspraxia and dyslexia are all the same part of the brain so she could have 2 at least
it seems sometimes you really do have to fight hard to get a result with loads of pushing
hope you get some help soon
I contacted the ed psy myself about my concerns (school wouldnt as they said they have other children with higher need that take preference). The ep agreed she has needs and saw her over 6 sessions at home (as school wouldnt agree to her bein g seen there!).
The ep report highlighted she has lots of learning needs and may have dyspraxia, her levels were all on the below average or significantly below average range and her overall learning is on the 7th percentile. The ep thinks her emotional and learning level is around age 8 (shes 13 in 4 weeks).
School refuse to give her extra help and are ignoring the ep recommendations. The school is one with high educational need and because shes not setting the school on fire etc and causing problems at school she is not priority. She actuall tries very hard at school and she is a friendly and pleasant girl (to the staff anyway, shes unable to get on with other kids). Her effort marks are always outstanding and she has got pupil of the year for effort in science and english, however she is bottom group in everything and is on level 3's and 4's (primary school levels).
The ep highlighted that she was receiving much more help at primary school and as a result was enjoying school much more and finding things easier but school wont budge. They say they have no funding. Parent partnership are involved but say if we go for statement its likely to be turned down (and then we cant apply again for 6 mths)as school havent done everything they can yet....but school wont.
I managed to self refer to camhs who were taking me seriously regarding asd until they saw the ep report and then they discharged her saying its learning difficulties.... im not happy as this doesnt explain her sensory issues, hand flapping, behaviour problems, anxiety, not able to get on with others, literal thinking, repetative behaviour etc.
I saw a o.t and phsiotherapist last week for dyspraxia who said she hasnt got this based on the test they did (she caught a ball and hopped across the room). They have referred me to a paediatrician to put my mind at rest about all my concerns though.
So im waiting for the paediatrician appt and this is my last hope. I'm just concerned that he will see she has been seen by ep, camhs and o.t and has been discharged by all, (plus school are saying she has no extra needs which quite clearly isnt the case) and so will think its just me looking for something to be wrong i.e. i'm concerned he will think if there was a problem then surely 1 of these agencies would have pucked it up by now and therefore send me packing
I'm not looking for something to be wrong, i genuinely want the best for my dd but i do beleive something is wrong. She has never been the same as other children in so many ways. They said she had the characteristics of adhd when younger but too young to diagnose, she had speech therapy also. Every school report she has had at different schools highlight a cause for concerned that she is unable to concentrate and unable to get on with other kids but none of them have ever referred her for help. Now I have plucked up the courage to speak out and after a year of fighting still havent got anywhere. I feel like i'm failing as a parent and the paediatrician is my last hope. I just hope he takes my concerns seriously!0 -
you are not failing, some areas are really hard to get a diagnosis in. before you go to the paedatrician please write everything down, start keeping a diary of sorts just to record little instances all that you have said on here as its very easy to forget when your there.
i really hope you get what you are looking for, and even though your not looking for something to be wrong, it clearly is and with a diagnosis more doors are opened for you and your daughter
good luck xx0
