can understand an admin fee for them to type out a few words on a policy again (which is a joke mind!)

Someone has to pay for all the staff answering the phone, the support staff (IT, actuaries, supervisors, compliance officers etc), liability (an ever increasing cost), computers, electricity, rates and so on.

So, you have a choice when you buy insurance. Do you buy from an insurer that has a slightly increased premium but no admin charges or do you buy from one that has a lower premium but charges an admin fee only when someone generates admin.
Is there anything i can do? Do insurance Osbudman deal with complaints about postcode lotterys and taking the p!ss with these extra charges ? i will write to my insurer first anyway asking for a breakdown to justify the major increase, just makes me mad that i get hit with this, and given i am half way through the policy, i dont have any options to go elsewhere or how to fight this ?

FOS will not take on complaints about commercial issues. They have received complaints about admin charges but their publications show that they have accepted admin charges up to £50 as being acceptable (they may accept more but there are no examples above £50 that have been published).

Its a bit late to be complaining about these things. You agreed to them when you took the policy out. They publish their charges yet you still bought the policy. If you dont like the fact there is an admin charge then you should not have bought this policy but paid more on the premium and gone with a no admin charge company instead.

cheers for that, guess it makes sense....
Insurance co screws people by OTT charges like this..
People screw insurance co by making PI claims when most are not warrantied.....
Dog Eat Dog as they say....

I'll post back later if my broker gets back to me with a breakdown of the charges.....

On the radio this morning they were talking about a popular roundabout for accidents in Warrington, which lead them onto saying that PI claims add £44 to each person's premium a year.

that link you sent is very very useful....
However, reading it has created Red Mist

I live in Cardiff, that list is basically saying that ALL of cardiff is high risk!
Where i live, and just down the lane (yeah, were away from the city centre) is a super super posh place, yet according to the website, this super super posh place is classed as high risk ?
ok granted, if your a burgler etc, you would go rob a nice area, but as far as i know, my area and this posh place have very low crime stats and low car theft (statistic source).......

Grrrrrrrrrrr......... guess i am screwed whichever way i look at it! :( Out comes the mountain bike now, think i need a side car for it! hehe :)

The risk is based on claims experience. Just because it is "super super posh" does not mean it is low risk. It probably means that when there is a claim it is "super super expensive" to settle.

If there wasnt a bad claims experience in your post code then the risk would be lower.

You can check your postcode on http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car-insurance-explained/car-insurance-postcode-risk-list.html

although, does the increase include the admin charge as well?

I wish people would stop posting that!

    (i) It is probably 10 years old, most if not all insurers will use sector if not full postcode rating for private car insurance
(ii) It is only one insurer's opinion of the risk (of motorcycles only for that matter!)
(iii) As rating becomes more sophisticated you will find that rating on socio-economic profile (eg Experian's MOSAIC) has a very large effect, independent on the postcode's pure risk.

1 - 'probably' isn't fact. So it could be recent
2 - it's not from an insurance company
3 - you just waffled to try and convince people you were right on 1 and 2
