And (again) the whole hub and seals are replaced - genuine parts.

  • If this is happening regularly i'm surprised Toyota haven't extended warranty to cover up to around hundred thou miles, probably the best manufacturer there is for customer care but you already know that.

I'd be inclined to look at the oil being used, type and spec, and include Toyota in the thought process, might be worth experimenting with some different but high quality oil, maybe try one with Millers fully synthetic diff oil, nothing to lose bar the price of a gallon of good stuff.

Toyota don't want to know after the warranty has run out.

The oil used in the diff is Toyota's own diff oil specifically for the Dyna - every part and oil used on these vehicles is genuine.

Toyota say that there is no design or technical fault with the Dyna's and therefore, no extended warranty or goodwill to be offered - that sort of thing seems to only be extended to customers in the USA, customer relations seem far superior across the board over there.

This is why we are curious to hear from other companies running Toyota Dyna's - to see if they too have had issues.

    That sounds more like them.
The problem here is the Japanese have alway denied any fault, and the public normally believe it, so they never have been held accountable. The american market don't accept rubbish from anyone, so the japanese car manufacturers actually have to be responsive, or be penalised.

Have you checked the breather in the diff? If it's blocked, it can blow the seals in the hub.

Yes Mikey72, breathers checked and replaced regularly - more often than one should have to really!

I'm not familiar with the design but as there are paper gaskets involved have you tried painting them with red Hermetite? I had a 1956 Mg Magnette once which had such oil leaks which were curable with Hermetite and very careful assembly. There had obviously been a problem with earlier models as BMC added an O ring to improve sealing but it wasn't a complete cure and you still had to assemble with care.
  • I imagine the seals in question are similar to a crankshaft oil seal positioned just outside of the rear outer half shaft bearings, probably with a spring inside the seal to put constant tension against the half shaft.

My suggestion of trying a different high quality oil is to eliminate the oil that has been used up to now, i'm wondering if the oil is degrading the seals.
By testing one the OP's company have nothing to lose, it possibly needs a process of elimination.

Mikey you are wrong about all Japanese makers not accepting their responsibilities when they are at fault in Britain, i agree one maker in particular has behaved like certain German badged companies.

Toyota however stand head and shoulders above all others by standing by their product, injectors and seal problems with Landcruiser/Hilux Diesels they will put new engines in if needed up to around 120k miles, similar with Avensis petrols burning excessive oil and Avensis Diesels blowing head gaskets will have the heads repaired/replaced up to very high mileages, and years after warranty has expired.

These faults should not have got through the testing procedures thats agreed, but show me any other maker who's prepared to accept they got things wrong and put them right years later.

If you've found the odd Toyota dealer who think they are still other european maker's dealers (staff come in from a German makers lack of service desk maybe and used to the customer being a nuisance) then find another Toyota dealer more in tune with the company's attitude to their customers.

On that note, Jeannie have you tried another dealer or tried escalating this problem to Toyota UK at Burgh Heath.

How can the oil put in the diff be altered when the Dyna is under warranty? Surely only what Toyota recommend should be used or it will affect the warranty? Then a few months down the line (when the warranty has run out), it starts leaking and Toyota say 'tough'...

Tried several dealers - and they have kindly contacted Toyota UK, but they don't want to know.

What would be the best way to try and find others who have had the same problem? Toyota seems to think its only us...
