My daughter wants to take her 8520 Curve to Majorca next week, she will only use txt and BBM so answers based on that please.
She is on a contract with Tesco with 250mins/5000txts/500MB + BBM.
Should I be worried about extra charges on her return?
TIA.

Her UK allowances don't apply abroad.
Texts will be free to receive and 10p to send.
BBM will cost her £4/Mb. There is £40 monthly cap in EU unless she opts out or buys some data roaming bundle.0 -
Great, thx Grumbler
Edit: Incidentally, how many BBM chats to and fro does 1 get per Mb in this situ? Thx.0 -
Since she's on a contract and thus 18 or over, isn't it her that should be worrying about roaming charges? No free lunch, and no free laptop

No, well under-18, my contract and BB staying at home by the looks of things.
And before anyone starts, no she never breaches any of her contract allowances. !!

Indeed, send her off with £20 on a PAYG SIM and no need to worry! No free lunch, and no free laptop

I think 1Mb is a pretty big number of messages. However, some data will be consumed by the phone in background even if no messages get sent and received. I don't know how much, but you can make an experiment while she is in UK to get an idea.albionrovers wrote: »Great, thx Grumbler

Also, if data roaming is on, I guess some other apps can use data without asking you0 -
Did you choose a Capped tariff? If you did, then there is no need to worry. Just top up via PAYG for her usage abroad.
If you did not, but chose only the one month contract and the month is up, then you can migrate to a Capped Tariff by calling 4455. This means that you cannot spend more than what you pay for your monthly contract, unless you add a PAYG Topup. Ideal for when you go abroad and want to keep a tight control on costs.
If you chose a 12 month tariff and are still in contract, then you are stuck.
You can think about taking a second SIM on a capped one month contract and then cancelling it immediately. But it's a bit of a waste of money.
But I think that you are on a one month contract. So just migrate to the capped tariff.0 -
In this instance I don't think the PAYG sim will help but I wouldn't let the phone out of the UK.
This is because without the BBM add on the phone is just a phone.0 -

As I wrote, it is absolutely fine to take the phone abroad, as you can cap your usage with Tesco BlackBerry and effectively use it as as PAYG whilst abroad.
Secondly, as it has not been mentioned before, you actually get 10MB of data per day for free whilst Roaming with Tesco BlackBerry. More than enough for BBM. With prudent usage, you can actually send a few pics every day.
Just top up £10 as a buffer.
I struggled to reach 4MB in a day whilst abroad and that was with sending pics and video. It is important to remember that we are referring to the Curve 8520, so no 3G capability. I think she'll be fine, as long as you follow my guidelines.
Just disable FaceBook from connecting to data whilst abroad..
