You want to try TESCO home insurance.

They don't ring you up or give you a reminder. They just take the money.

I've been insured with Tesco for the last couple of years - yet to have this happen. They send a quote with a number to ring to cancel if necessary.
  • I'm with Admiral and every year they hike up the renewal. I usually get a cheaper quote from one of their sister companies. When I phone them to cancel and say that I got a cheaper quote from their sister company they always offer to match it.

The only safe way of not being auto-renewed is to write to the insurer and send it recorded. Then they can't deny you haven't informed them. Some people have had auto-renew money taken despite verbally requesting not to. Then it's very difficult to get it back without cancellation fees.
  • In November 2010 I insured my car with Admiral Insurance Service. I expressly stated that I did not want the policy to be automatically renewed at the end of the first year.

Admiral wilfully or negligently ignored this condition, increased the premium by around 25% and mailed out a new policy to begin November 2011.

I telephoned them; they said they would cancel the renewal. I confirmed the conversation by fax.

Once again, Admiral wilfully or negligently ignored this verbal and written instruction; they did not cancel the policy and made an unauthorised debit on my credit card.

This compelled me to contact my credit card company to have the charge reversed.

In my opinion, Admiral Insurance are either grossly incompetent in their administration, or they deliberately choose to ignore simple instructions from their clients.

Unfortunately for Admiral, I am a part-time money management coach and, despite their competitive insurance rates, I will be unable to recommend their services.

    Avoid Admiral Insurance.

Hmmm, I had my auto-renew letter through from Admiral yesterday - complete with a £250 increase despite having both turned 25 and racked up that all-important first year's NCB this year.

Found an identical policy through the comparison sites for £400 cheaper so planning to call admiral tonight to tell them (politely of course) where to shove it. Should I ask them for confirmation in writing, or write to them as well as calling, or something else along those lines?

I have been with admiral for the past 3 years now.

TBH I have not had a problem with them, yes they do send you letters telling you they will renew your policy if you don't ring up to cancel, but I don't have a problem with that. It is usually a quick phone call policy cancelled, or even get a quote online before hand with the cheaper price and get them to use that as my new policy.

I wouldn't say they are particularly better or worse than any other insurance company, they have all operated pretty much the same in my experience. I just stick with them first of all on price and also because I am insured to drive any other vehicle, which some insurance have cut back on.

All three for me each year.

Happened to me with Aviva. Rang them to advise I did not wish to renew, I even made a note of the name of the person I spoke to. Despite this they still charged the large renewal premium to my bank account. When I rang to query why the policy had been renewed against my clear instructions, they had the nerve to suggest that I had not contacted them!! Good job I had taken the name of the person I had spoken to otherwise I doubt they would of given me a full refund which they did eventually although it took several days for them to recredit my account. Cheeky sods!!
