Automatic car insurance renewals
I am getting so fed up with getting renewal notices which state that they are going to take my money for next year unless I call them and listen their scripted sales talk. Every year I get the reply "Well you could have declined having automatic renewals when you took out the policy" - but, try as I might, I have never found that option. has anybody here managed to do so?
Like any good MSEer I always take out a new policy each year, buying online and using the cashback options where possible. So even if I did get a simple letter inviting me to renew, I would be most unlikely to take it up - but in any event I wouldn't renew with anybody who thinks that they can just assume agreement and take my money.
Am I just being a grumpy old git, or do others here feel the same way?

You want to try TESCO home insurance.
They don't ring you up or give you a reminder. They just take the money.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
Highly annoying, but I suspect there's more to it than meets the eye (govt related).
What gets me is how they hike the renewal premium in the hope you'll just go with it!!! I saved £250 by phoning up for a quote from my insurance companies sister company and then going back to my insurer for a price match!!!!!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

I kind of like automatic renewals- yes calling up cancelling and the money they whack on each year is a pain, but less of a pain than forgetting and getting caught with no insurance.0 -
Ooops! I read the thread title and thought someone was having problems renewing insurance for an automatic transmission car!:o:)
My last two years renewal quotes have actually been better than any other I could find by searching. When I've 'phoned to renew (LV) they've actually advised each time that it's subject to automatic renewal. Each time I've just told them I don't want that and it seems to have worked.
I agree though, AR should not be the default.0 -
I used SwiftCover last year. I July this year I got an email telling me the renewal price, which I wasn't going to pay, so i logged on to my portal and clicked the 'do not renew' button and I had to do nothing else.0

My OH has never had an autorenewal car insurance policy so it isn't everyone. He got a letter with the quote for next year but didn't take it up and other than a letter reminding him that if he hadn't a policy he wasn't covered nothing happened.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I just ask at the commencement of any policy that I don't want it to auto-renew, so it's never a problem.0

I see eSure have moved to automatic renewal. I don't see why I should have to decide now whether I want to renew in a year's time so I'll be telling them I don't do business with companies that employ such trickery.0

i can see the point but i'd imagine that without automatic renewals you'd get a hell of a lot more people driving around without insurance because they'd forgotten to renewCome on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0

you're being really really obvious posting that number everywhere. it doesn't look very professional and i think it has more of a detrimental affect than a positive one.and they offer to call and confirm. They handle your policy themselves, very professional. Saved all the hassle my end.Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?0
