  • 7 years for a boiler life is coblers,
Ive seen boilers that havent had a spanner put on them in 20 years, not advisable though.

They should really be checked every two years, when I say check I mean burner, bar reading and the one people should think about and dont, for carbon monoxide traces.

Rule of thumb really is if you see yellow in the flame its inefficient, gas boilers dont need much Tlc but they do need the little they should get.

British Gas try not to use subbies and have thier own schools that teach their own men the knowledge,
remember you get gas fitters and plumbers who can work with gas.
they should have acops certs,a hard set of exams in themselves.
If buying from new, make sure the boiler you are buying is on the british gas service list.
The gas fitter has 20 minutes to check your system and if its on a 3 star service all parts are covered, the only downside you may have to wait 24 hours after your call for service they also have a no claim discount too.

My fav boilers = potterton, valiant and worcester.

Stelrad also do 'proven' ideal mexico boilers that last for yonks.

I think British Gas service do a good job,for a good price.

I have a myson boiler, its twelve years old,its had a new fan and the system has required a changeover valve.
But then again I didnt take the insurance until the system was 7 years old ;)

I dont work for them, but Im in the gas business.

Sorry when i said "fixed" the clock - i mean they did not fix it at all. They reset the time and it was still broken.

I replaced it myself for a whacking great £16.00 a month ago. Thats just a bit more than a month's worth of 3* care.

(yeah I appreciate others may not be able to do that but still....)

I am not going to bother contacting them as they have already advertised themselves to me as being a worthless shower of *?!$.

But thanks for the advice ;D
Of course this is entirely ypour perogative, but you buy a new place, beleive every word the vendor tells you, then when you have problems straight away with the heating instead of taking it up with BG you post complaining on here :-/

Hmm..I'm not so sure. I worked as a lorry driver delivering them from Stelrad/Ideal Standard in Hull. THere were quite a few returns for some models. Mind you, at least they have a Marks & Spencer return policy so it makes life a little easier.
  • I have Gas 3* service.
    Have had CH 16 years.
Had two new radiators to replace old radiators a couple of years ago. No charge for them.

I still say use a trusted independant gas engineer, CORGI-registered, not a BG gas engineer/salesmen. If you use BG and BG say anything about your installation that will cost you, check with your boiler manufacturer or a trusted independant gas engineer, CORGI-registered. Get a second opinion from a CORGI-registered gas engineer, not a commission orientated salesman. Our boiler is 20years+ with nil repairs, hope I have not spoken too soon!!!!!!!!!

Our Ideal Concord boiler is still going after 25yrs. Been on BG 3* all of that time. Had 3 pumps, 1 Hot Water Cylinder, 1 Programmer, 1 Boiler Thermostat and numerous Thermocouples and an automatic vent fitted, all free of charge. So I reckon I'm not that far off breaking even on what I've spent. And here in Gloucestershire they are often here same day if you ring early, next day at the latest.
  • You remind me of my Dad who wore the same suit for fifty years. He had 11 new jackets and 18 new pairs of trousers in that time.

Just to add, we have a house with a 3 year old boiler and it broke down, before we got the bg service and cost me 300 quid, we have since used bg and it has a a couple more problems and i have to say bg have been excellent, would never use them as a supplier, but have never had any prbolems with them and always a fast respnse and so far deffently had our moneys worth.

They phoned yesterday to make appointment for service and asked if I had any problems. Told them one valve was leaking. They arrived this morning replaced the valve and then serviced the boiler. Cost £00.00

Oh, it's gone midnight, make that Thursday and yesterday...............
