Train line near to house i want to buy

  • We're not too far from a train line. We can't hear the passenger trains but the freight trains are really loud. So don't just go on timetables. I'm sorry don't know how you'd find out about freight trains though, particularly as they run right through the night. I think i'd speak to local station staff for pointers in right direction. Or speak to adjoining houses

If you go to one of the specialist train forums like wnxx and ask, someone might have access to the full timetables including freight and special workings. However do not take the pxxx out of them for being trainspotters otherwise you will get some interesting answers!

Been a couple of similar threads that will give some other views (just search for 'railway line' or something).

Most say they get used to it - but bear in mind some won't ever! I'd hate to buy a property and the noise drive me insane (I'm not good with noise anyway!).

Also, be careful if you have cats. I'd not take the risk with mine. My stoopid ginger one would probably think the track looked like it'd make a good headrest. Doesn't bear thinking about...

  • Might be a good idea to check out how late they run as well. Best answer is try one of the train enthusiast sites. Bear in mind though that timetables can vary winter/summer, same for freight.
    Back on the trains again!

Better than living next to a motorway or main road on both counts though.

    Hiya,

I live in a road next to a train line. We never even notice the trains at all! Its really not a problem. Don't let it put you off. I get irritated by noises and this has never annoyed me.

  • We are 10m from a railway line.

We honestly do not hear the trains any more, except in the depths of winter when they send a "de-icer" train through in the middle of the night.

It took about a week for the mind to block out the noise.
  • Trains 100m away from me - lovely sound - very comforting. Would recommend it to anyone!

We have a train line at the bottom of our garden (about 100 ft away), and honestly it doesn't bother us.
And if anything I'm the type of person it should bother as I hate noise, but really we dont even notice. If you love the house go for it. There's alot worse things you could have there!

I'd love to have a train line at the bottom of the garden. A friend of mine lives next to the Metropolitan tube line in Chesham and doesn't even register the trains now, yet got the house at a good price because of it.

    Go for it.
