I work with some extremely well-travelled people (I'm not one of them ) and quite a few of them say that Ghent is one of the nicest places for sightseeing.0

Istanbul, Lisbon, Berlin or Amsterdam. Depends where you're flying from and budget though.0

I like going on city breaks in January, especially if there is snow - Prague, Krakow, Vienna are beautiful and there are few tourists around at that time of year. Lots of sights to see and public transport is really cheap.0

We are partial to a weekend city break and since living in Europe for the past 5 years have managed to see quite a few so here are my recommendations with regards to walking and sight seeing.
Prague - Compact and picturesque.
Krakow - Good small city and interesting with the Salt Mines and Auschwitz close by
Berlin - lots around but I found it quite spread out.
Sofia (where I live at the moment) it will be freeeeezing but there is Vitosha mountain right next to it which is good to ski and walk.
Copenhagen - lovely lovely. We went Nov time so cold but didn't make a difference.
Stockholm - again beautiful city and you can take a boat trip round the city
Brussels - not as boring as it's reputation.
Vienna - I love all of Austria, steeped in history.
Munich - interesting city better if you like a beer
Riga & Tallin - Grouped them together as they are similar, small cities with the old towns being picturesque and easy to navigate.
Rome - will still be cold but of course sooooo much to see. I love Rome.
Budapest - lots to see as you have the Buda side the castle, labyrinth and hills and the Pest side the parliament and more built up side. Also easy to get food and drinks.
Good cities but not sure about going in January.
Istanbul - wonderful place and lots to see... not sure about this time of year though
Athens - Amazing we went this spring. The main sites are surprisingly close together so easy to see
Warsaw - I lived there but will be around -20. Old town is nice and a bit of history for you there too
Dubrovnik - Beautiful and you can walk around the city on the top of the city wall - but not sure if much will be open as Croatia tends to wind right down out of sunshine time (I lived in Croatia too)
Good luck in choosing - let us know where you decide to go."People buy things they don't need, with money they don't have, to impress people they don't like" - Clive Hamilton on Consumerism.0 -
Athens might not be a great idea ATM, the OP could get there and could be strikes etc  Might be better to wait to visit there.0

chellchoc where are you flying from. i'd personally look at say easyjet and see where you can go, then do a quick read of the highlights. (type top 10 copenhagen into google) and see what looks good, then ask for advice on here. (i will always fly easyjet over ryan)
lufthansa have good deals to germany at the moment , then always use a site like kayak or skyscanner to check other airlins
europe is full of great places, too many to choose, so limit your choice.
off hand i can't think of any european city or country I've not liked, and i've been to most.
although i don't think i'll ever want to go back to barcelona (been twice once friends once missus), well until HTAFC play them in the champions league0 -

I've looked in going to Ghent one year, and it does look lovely

I would recommend Kiev as well... Beautiful, very historical and quite different. Plenty museums, sightseeing, nice food...0
