What is Ardrossan/Saltcoats like to live in ?

My lasting memory of Ardrossan is sitting watching the world go by in a busy little cafe there one morning in my leathers (was on a motorbike trip) and a police car drew-up outside.
As soon as the door opened and a short, sturdy WPC climed out, all the other customers apart from myself and a couple of old dears (who didn't bat an eyelid) got-up and ran for the back door.
The WPC strode straight through the cafe, into the departing throng who were still trying to get out the rather crowded back lobby, grabbed some skinny, middle aged guy then marched him back through the cafe and out to the car where she and her colleague had a brief pointed chat before letting him go.
The WPC then came back into the cafe and stood there hands on hips, looking straight at me like I was some sort of alien (OK, my Dad was from Greenock), just landed! I bid her good morning, smiled and then returned her gaze as she stared me out for another minute or so before turning on her heel and striding out with a face like thunder.
Strange!
The other thing I remember is that Ardrossan/Saltcoates gave the world Epsom Salts, so you could at least lay claim to living in the sh"tting capital of the world?0 -
The 3 towns are full of neds, junkies and junkie neds - FACT!
West Kilbride in general is a wee bit nicer as it's smaller, but not the best.
I agree with some others saying south ayrshire is better, Largs too though that's a bit more expensive for some daft reason. I don't know many proper nice seaside towns around central scotland. The nicest places to live in terms of the communities are actually inland.0 -

Largs is quieter, although everywhere has their share of neds nowadays, just some have more than others.
Largs has an older population, plenty retirees, but good transport links & facilities.
Just look at the property prices to decide how "good" an area is or not.

Just because I am surrounded by FOOLS does not make me wise. :j0 -
Largs has a very good secondary school and house prices are boosted by that as well. Although even Largs is becoming infested with neds now. Gourock has some nice areas, but it also has some really, really bad areas.0

There are flats available to buy in Port Glasgow in good sandstone tenements at < 10K. !!!!!
Enough said.

It is a lot more run down than I remember it, and I'm in my early twenties! Ardrossan isn't too bad, but will depend entirely on where you are living. Largs could be a good choice, but more expensive for housing.
If you are wanting a coastal setting that is still within commuting distance, I'd recommend looking a tad further south and looking into places like Troon and Prestwick. You could also look into places like Gourock, although I don't have much experience of Inverclyde.
Would second! AVOID. I lived very close to Saltcoats and lived within it for 6 months. DIRE! Ardrossan. Again lived here for 2 years. Basically the place might as well be the desert!
These two town esp Saltcoats is full of neds and the alike as well as Irvine for that matter.
Would agree with looking from Ayr to Prestwick or indeed Largs.0 -
Sorry, I live in Glasgow so it's hard to pass full judgement on the three towns area.
When I pass by for work there are some good points and a few double-take wrong uns.
See what the skateboarding youngsters say on Knowhere Guide, amongst other points....

I'd've thought that you should aim to stay close to your relatives; your options of EK / Paisley / Saltcoats seem pretty spread out, or do you have your own jet pack?0 -
the whole North Ayrshire area is a black hole of deprevation & hoplessness, seriously it would send the happiest of people to alcoholism, employment is poor, the schools are every bit as bad and well, the towns are getting worse as we go on. The three towns are also notorious as being hotspots for shall we say "undesirable" activity & the area is the single worst zone for sectarian nonsense outside Glasgow.
South Ayrshire is moderately better in terms of employment & facilities, slightly more expensive but as people say, stick to Troon, Prestwick or Ayr and you can always jump a train up to Glasgow easy enough.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0 -
Where are the family anyway?0
