VIN number in windscreen - best to cover it up?

Well, I am a Copper and I have to say I've never heard of this.
In fact, If I came across a car where the owner had 'obscured' the VIN I would be doing detailed (and time consuming) checks on both vehicle and owner to ensure that everything was in order before letting them go.
It's to assist the easy identification of a vehicle, not to make it easier to clone them. Knowing the VIN doesn't even assist in cloning a car. People cloning cars either do a poor job (just whack plates on it to sell it quickly or use it in crime) or if they're very good they'll adopt a scrapped/written off cars identity. You don't want to be in a 'duplicate' car - because document checks, ANPR, and police stops very quickly reveal that there are two cars with the same identity out and about.
So no, I would say don't cover up your VIN. Overly paranoid IMO.0
